Purpose of the role:

The Mining Contracts Manager is key to ensuring the safe, efficient and cost controlled execution of the mine plan by the Mining Contractor to the specified contract standards, mining schedules and best practice mining systems.  The incumbent must bring extensive underground mechanised mining experience as both a mining contractor and more recently as an owner’s team member, in leading and managing greenfields and brownfields underground mining development and construction projects, as well as proven management performance in mining production activities (Sub Level Open Stoping operations).

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Provide support to Head of Mining and the Mining Department team in developing an achievable mining project execution plan for the development of the Zone 5 underground mine, then executing a suitable operational readiness program for transition to production;
  • Introduce effective and fit for purpose management systems, mining procedures and systems of work to ensure standards and performance of the underground mine are safe, efficient and productive in line with international best practice;
  • Management and co-ordination of site establishment of an underground mining contractor, underground equipment specifications and selection, underground construction and project work, timely completion of project development and transition to steady state production mining activities (as an Open Stoping mining operation);
  • Performance management of a mining contractor from daily operations through to periodic planning and forecasting (weekly, quarterly and annual), cost control, commercial contract management and reporting as required by company standards;
  • Integrate and support cross functional mining work streams of Mining Operations, Mining Technical, Mining Geology and Mining Maintenance. Further to provide experience and guidance to the team in dealing with general surface support services and downstream processes from the mine to improve overall effectiveness of the operation;
  • Apply experience in support of underground site specific equipment specifications and selection, engagement with key suppliers to ensure required standards and specifications for underground hard rock mines are achieved;
  • Responsible for the implementation of a fit for purpose contractor management system. Identify, manage and address any issues of non-performance or non-compliance with the mining contractor;
  • Manage and co-ordinate the mining contractor and owner’s team to ensure that all requirements are met and satisfied as they relate to Health, Safety and Environmental standards. Ensure a proactive safety culture that supports high quality investigations of all incidents to ensure learning and advancement;
  • Actively monitor the mining contractors’ performance against established training commitments and skills transfer targets, ensuring adherence to the localisation plan for identified roles;
  • Provide support and guidance to develop needed skills and training for the site Mine Rescue team, ensuring the requisite skills, training and equipment is provided to ensure readiness in the event of any adverse occurrence in the Underground Mining environment;
  • Engage and support the mobile maintenance function and general site services to ensure high standards are set and effective work management systems are applied and followed, ensuring the mining department provides a high reliability, high availability working environment;
  • Identify ongoing initiatives to ensure Continuous Improvement of performance in the mine as relates to safety, productivity, standards, cost and general exposure to risks; and
  • Ensure execution of the mining work program by the contractor and ensure compliance to applicable Botswana Regulations and Laws.

Minimum qualifications, experience and skill requirements:

  • Extensive experience in underground mechanised hardrock mining, having worked in key leadership, management or advisory roles for both an underground mining contractor and mine owner (practical experience essential with mechanised mining equipment fleet, twin boom Jumbos, Production Drill Rigs, Stope Blasting methods);
  • Proven performance leading, managing, coaching and mentoring professional and operation staff in challenging working environments, with prior experience in major mining jurisdictions;
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 20 years underground hardrock mechanised mining experience, preferably with experience as an equipment operator, operational Supervisor and Manager (degree qualification not required, specified experience essential);
  • A proven track record of effectively managing a mining contractor in a productive, safe and efficient underground mechanised mining environment (Sub level open stoping);
  • Leadership, Management and Business acumen experience in the Underground Mining sector;
  • Valid drivers licence;
  • Excellent stakeholder management capability;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organisation;
  • A team player;
  • Excellent organizational skills; and
  • Ability to work under pressure.

Project Director – Khoemacau

Purpose of the role:

The Project Director will be tasked with building and ramping up a significant mining project into production.  The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining and growing Khoemacau’s presence in the north-west district and project site.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute the safety, engineering, procurement, construction, quality and start-up for the project;
  • Develop and monitor the scope, cost, schedule, safety and quality goals for the project;
  • Implement project scope and cost controls, monitor work performance and institute a program to identify, document and manage trends, variances and contingency drawdown in accordance with protocol and procedure;
  • Constant review of project progress, ensuring timely and accurate forecasts of schedules and cost;
  • Ensure accountability throughout the project delivery team, establish and delegate authority;
  • Establish clear communication and documentation protocols;
  • Along with the Managing Director, ensure a strong working relationship with the Botswana Government, local community, Cupric Canyon Capital management and the Khoemacau operations team; and
  • Ensure the finalisation of all contracts, the Project close-out report as well as the smooth handover between project and operational staff.

Qualification and Experience:

  • Minimum of a B.SC. degree in a resource industry related engineering discipline;
  • Membership to the Engineering Registration Board of Botswana;
  • 20+ years’ experience in project execution and management of operations within mining/engineering fields, specifically in underground mining environments. The experience should ideally encompass each of the main phases of project development from conceptualisation through to construction.  Experience in leading a project through the early stages of feasibility and development is key;
  • Previous experience of developing mining projects on the African continent would be a distinct advantage;
  • Ability to drive effective collaboration at all levels of the organisation, within the project team and with external stakeholders;
  • Proven track record in project and stakeholder management for projects of similar magnitude and complexity; capital project management experience in excess of $350M;
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to build, develop and motivate high performing teams comprised of staff and external contractors/vendors;
  • An ownership mentality with the maturity and confidence to take full responsibility for project execution;
  • A sense of urgency, self-motivated, results orientated and a disciplined doer;

Chief Mine Geologist (Underground) – Khoemacau

To establish a systematic and integrated approach to applying modern methods in the management of geological processes on site in support of a productive mechanised mining environment.  The Chief Geologist will establish grade control drilling and modelling processes, operational mine geology procedures, systems and processes and lead the Geology department in a collaborative and efficient manner in support of Mining Operations and Mining Technical teams.

Purpose of the role:

To establish a systematic and integrated approach to applying modern methods in the management of geological processes on site in support of a productive mechanised mining environment.  The Chief Geologist will establish grade control drilling and modelling processes, operational mine geology procedures, systems and processes and lead the Geology department in a collaborative and efficient manner in support of Mining Operations and Mining Technical teams.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Develop an efficient and suitable method for Grade Control drilling and modelling of the orebody to ensure timely delivery of quality information to the Mining teams;
  • Develop and design underground diamond drilling programmes as required for exploration, resource conversion to reserve and grade control drilling. Effective management of diamond drilling processes to ensure safe, efficient and productive work from drilling to core management through to updating of information to the geological database;
  • Establish and implement systems, processes and procedures to ensure quality management;
  • Ensure that the necessary monitoring and controls are in place for effective management of ore and waste streams;
  • Introduce relevant and appropriate systems to ensure efficient mine mapping and capturing of mine data through to geological and mine design software;
  • Management of the day to day function of the Geology department, in a collaborative manner with Mining Operations and Technical teams. Assign tasks, allocate work and develop the team;
  • Develop systems of reporting and reconciliation as needed to effectively manage the performance of the orebody and geological models, in line with site and company requirements;
  • Manage and co-ordinate the Geological department function and any drilling activities to ensure all requirements are met and satisfied as they relate to Health, Safety and Environmental standards. Ensure a proactive safety culture that supports high quality investigations of all incidents to ensure learning and advancement;
  • Ensure all staff are trained, competent and provided with opportunities for continuous growth. Coach, mentor and develop individual and team capability.  Encourage and lead a work culture of continuous improvement;
  • Formulate the annual capital and operating budgets, manage departmental costs in line with approved budgets; and
  • Maintain connections and networks to new technologies and trends related to Geology, constantly seeking opportunities to introduce and improve practices and work effectiveness.

Minimum qualifications, experience and skill requirements:

  • BSc (Hons) Geology degree/ BSc relevant degree, additional specialised training desirable;
  • +10 years post qualification experience, with a minimum of 7 years in an underground hard rock mechanised mining environment (predominantly Base metals, or relevant Gold experience);
  • Competence and qualified for QP Sign Off is essential;
  • Demonstrated strength in structural geology, mine operational geology, geological database and orebody modelling, and geology department management;
  • Formal professional or technical registration with an internationally recognised Geological Body;
  • Experience with a suite of Geological software required for the project and mine;
  • Overseas work experience, preferably in an African mining jurisdiction preferred (not essential);
  • Valid drivers licence;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organisation;

Currently the company is looking to recruit a Head of Mining who will be based onsite at the operations. The Head of Mining will be responsible for oversite of Mining Operations, the Mining Contractor, Safety, Maintenance, Mining Infrastructure and Mining technical services.

Purpose of the role:

Initially the Head of Mining will lead the finalisation of the project study work and overall mining operational readiness

Once the company commissions its mining operations, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall management of the underground operation which will be designed to deliver world-class performance in a safe and efficient underground mechanised mine, which is aligned with the company’s strategy.

Particular attention will be required in respect of skills development and skills transfer as well as Health, Safety and Environmental issues.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Conceptualise and implement strategies, systems and processes to ensure the safe and successful execution of the project and operation of the mine, including compliance to all statutory requirements;
  • Co-ordinate the transition of the project from a feasibility level project to an execution ready mining project;
  • Together with Human Resources, drive the selection and recruitment of team members;
  • Assist in the development and execution of staff training plans, and the implementation of the localisation plan;
  • Co-ordinate the adjudication and selection of the key mining contracts;
  • Develop long and short-term business and mine plans to allow development of mining cost (Capital and Operating) and physical budgets, establishing periodic forecasts and reporting for short-term control and compliance to plans;
  • Champion new continuous improvement initiatives and act as the catalyst for change and improvement;
  • Constantly improve reporting systems and Key Performance Indicators;
  • Monitor performance against budgeted targets ensuring effective cost control; and
  • Contribute to the preparation of the annual budget and long term strategies.

Minimum qualifications, experience and skill requirements:

  • BE or BSc in Mining Engineering or other relevant technical qualification;
  • Mine Manager’s Certificate of competency for metalliferous underground mines;
  • Membership of Engineering Registration Board (ERB);
  • A post graduate qualification in Business Management or relevant experience would be advantageous;
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 15 years technical experience and have worked in underground mechanised operations for a minimum of 10 years with increasing responsibilities;
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 10 years management experience in underground metalliferous mines, with experience at General Management level preferred;
  • Experience in mining studies, mine construction and development, and management of mining operations and technical functions – within an underground mining environment.
  • Proven contract negotiation skills as well as contractor management experience, specific to an underground hardrock mining environment;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organisation;
  • A team player and experience in managing a multidisciplinary team; and
  • Excellent communication and people skills.

The successful candidate will report to the Managing Director and will be based on site. The incumbent will be required to travel internationally from time to time.
