Overview of role

The establishment of the Leather Industry Park (LIP) in Lobatse is part of Botswana’s economic diversification drive. The park, which will include a Common Effluent Treatment Plant, chrome recovery, sewage treatment plant, secure landfill facility and laboratory, will fall under the auspices of Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) and bring together Small and Medium sized businesses in the leather production value chain. It’s an exciting project which has huge potential to create significant employment opportunities and impact the livelihood of many Batswana.

Reporting to the LEA CEO and Leather Industry Park (Pty) Ltd Board of Directors the Chief Operations Officer (COO) will initiate, plan, organise, develop and coordinate policies and strategies for the operations of the leather industry park with a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), chrome recovery, sewage treatment plant, secure landfill facility and laboratory. To promote technology and innovation within the Leather Industry Park through implementation of innovative processes.

Job description

Strategy and Policy Development
As a representative of Government and member of LEA executive management, participates in the development of policies and strategies which will enable the organisation to deliver its mandate of promoting the growth of sustainable prosperous businesses in the leather industry SMME sub-sector.

Networking and Coordination
Proactively identifies and coordinates appropriate partner organisations and institutions in the public and private sector, domestically and internationally capable of delivery of technical expertise and advice and innovative solutions to the technologies at the leather park.

Technology and Innovation
Ensures that the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and its cooperating partners keep abreast of technological developments and innovative process solutions and products which could provide an enabling environment for leather industry SMMEs to thrive and have a competitive advantage in breaking into domestic and export markets with quality products to meet a sustainable customer market demand.

Service Delivery
Develops appropriate operational processes and procedures for the delivery of technological advice and innovative process solutions to the leather park for production of finished leather.

Human Capital Management
Effectively manages the human resources of the Leather Industry Park according to authorized human resources policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and legislation.

Requirements, Education and Experience

  • A Degree in Leather Technology, Chemical/Environmental Engineering or its equivalent and a Masters Degree in Business Administration will be an added advantage. A combination of relevant experience, academic qualifications and extensive experience in leather industry will be acceptable.
  • At least 8 – 10 years’ experience in management of environmental services and tanning for the leather industry including at a professional and managerial level in the development and implementation of technological solutions to operational business problems and the promotion of technology and innovation in product and service development. In addition must have experience in the establishment of the leather industry district/park (start-ups).
