Internal Auditors X5 – Botswana Power Corporation

Job Purpose

​To coordinate, lead and carry out medium to high risk Control and Value for Money audits in order to provide objective assurance on integrity of operations, projects, financial information and organization’s compliance with policies, board directives, practices and procedures.​

Principal Accountabilities/Responsibilities
The successful incumbent will be accountable and responsible for but not limited to the following:
  1. ​​Assists in the coordination and facilitation of Risk Workshops by taking notes/minutes and preparing the report on the outcomes or risks identified during the departmental workshops.
  2. Identifies risks within assigned audit projects and reconcile to the strategic/corporation risks identified during the risk management workshop to validate the entire risk management process and report to the Principal Auditor and Manager on any deviations.
  3. Carries out assigned medium/high risk audits including Controls and Value for Money audits to identify adequacy of internal controls and efficiency and effectiveness of all systems and procedures and make recommendations on remedial action.
  4. Plans and develops audit programmes that are effective, and also responsive to the risks identified through workshops and manager concerns.
  5. Reviews and interprets internal BPC policies and procedures and applies professional internal auditing principles and standards, using Business and/or Corporate Governance Models such as COSO, Cadbury etc, to test and evaluate financial records and operational systems.
  6. Prepares detailed working papers in respect of the audit assignment in accordance with laid down procedures.
  7. Reviews and evaluates team working papers and peer audit reports to ensure that they provide adequate basis for reporting and that the draft report items are of high standard, before review by the Principal Internal Auditor and ensures that all serious deficiencies         are properly and timely brought to the attention of the Internal Audit Manager, the Principal Internal Auditor and Management.
  8. Follows up on previous audit recommendations and monitors management action against audit queries to ensure identified risk are addressed.
  9. Carries out any investigation of medium to high risk fraud or any other category of misappropriation, which may have occurred, and or other special investigations, as requested by the Principal Internal Auditor and timeously make recommendations to prevent future similar occurrences.
  10. Participates and opens tenders in accordance with BPC policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Tender Regulations.
  11. Prepares audit reports for review by the Principal Internal Auditor.
  12. Ensures that all safety and loss control standards (Safety Health and Environmental) contained in the Corporation’s standards are adhered to.
  13. Undertake such other related duties as directed by the supervisor.
Qualifications
  • ​A recognized degree in Accounting, Business or related area. Membership of an internationally recognized professional institute of accountants or auditors such as ACCA, CIMA and CIA preferred.​
Experience
  • ​Five (5) years relevant practical experience of which two (2) would have been in public or internal auditing function or three (3) years’ experience if professionally qualified (ACCA, CIMA, CIA).​
