Summary of the Role
The role is responsible for the support and maintenance of computer systems, desktops, and peripherals. The incumbent will be responsible for installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining and the upgrade of all organisational hardware and equipment, while ensuring optimal workstation performance. The person will also troubleshoot problem areas (in person, by telephone, via a help desk call or any other approved means) and provide end-user assistance. In addition the person will work with suppliers to procure information technology (IT) assets. The job also entails maintenance of the IT assets register.
Duties
The duties of the Desktop Services Technician will include –
- Receiving and responding to incoming calls, emails and / or work orders regarding desktop problems.
Conducting research and making recommendations for hardware products in support of IT procurement and development efforts.
- Performing on-site diagnosis and resolution of complex desktop problems and implementing corrective solutions, including off-site repair for remote users as needed.
- Installing and maintaining of end-user hardware and other products in order to deliver required desktop service levels.
- Liaising with third party support and computer equipment vendors.
Requirements
Required Academic Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required Experience
Three to five years working experience.
Required Knowledge and Competencies
- Excellent knowledge of Computer and desktop hardware and its internal components.
- Working technical knowledge of current protocols, operating systems and standards.
- Ability to operate tools, components, and peripheral accessories.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals and procedural documentation.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to conduct research into Computer and software issues and products as required.
