Legal Aid Botswana is a Parastatal under the Ministry of Justice established under the Legal Aid Act, Cap. 16:02, with the objective to provide legal representation, legal advice, and public education on legal matters to the indigent. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following positions under Legal Aid Botswana. Appointment to this position will be on a Permanent and Pensionable terms.

2. VACANCY CIRCULAR NO 6 OF 2022: LEGAL AID COUNSEL – GABORONE × 3

(Tenable in Gaborone)

Main Purpose of the job:

To represent Legal Aid clients in Civil Litigation suits and provide guidance to Legal Aid

Officers

Duties and responsibilities:

• Undertakes litigation on behalf of legal aid clients.
Drafts court documents and conducts legal research.
Assesses and recommends out of courts settlements.
Attends court for judgement.
• Lodges or responds to an appeal where necessary.
• Negotiates settlement and contractual agreements.
• Consults with clients to get full instructions and develop positions.
• Drafts complex contracts and agreements.
• Renders legal advice on complex matters
• Attends various Legal Aid Botswana meetings to advice on legal matters

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Law
• Candidates must have been admitted to practice in the Courts of Botswana in terms of the legal Practitioners Act (CAP 61:01)

• Demonstration of good standing and be on the roll of attorneys in Botswana
• Valid Driver’s license
• Must be a citizen of Botswana

Work Experience

• A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in the field of Law.
• Experience in criminal litigation will be an added advantage.
• Must have served pupillage in line with the Legal Practitioner’s Act.
