Mining Manager – Khoemacau Copper Mining (Pty) Ltd (Khoemacau)


MINING MANAGER

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

  • Initially the Mining Manager will lead the finalisation of the project optimisation work and overall mining operational readiness. Once the company commissions its mining operations, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall management of the underground mining and mining technical functions by ensuring implementation of objectives within the department’s strategic plan, legal requirements and best mining engineering principles. Mining Manager reports to the General Manager.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Develop and implement strategies, systems and processes to ensure the safe and successful execution of the project and operation of the mine, including compliance to all statutory requirements;
  • Participate in the development of business strategy to meet the organisation’s medium and long term plans;
  • Directs and coordinates the development of the mining implementation plan to ensure that the project meet its key objectives;
  • Drive the selection and recruitment of team members for the mechanised underground operations;
  • Ensure that the mining department is adequately resourced to meet short and medium-term objectives;

  • Strategise, plan, and implement requirements to meet future objectives;
  • Coordinate the adjudication and selection of the key mining contracts;
  • Oversee the management of contractors during operations;
  • Develop long and short-term business and mine plans to allow development of mining cost (capital and operating) and physical budgets;
  • Establish periodic forecasts and reporting for short-term control and compliance to mining plans;
  • Champion new continuous improvement initiatives and act as the catalyst for change and improvement;







  • This position carries a legal appointment in terms of the Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act (Cap 44:02);
  • Ensure that relevant statutory requirements are adhered to;
  • Constantly improve reporting systems and key performance indicators; Monitor performance against budgeted targets ensuring effective cost controls; and
  • Contribute to the preparation of the annual budget and long-term strategies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 15 years mining experience and have worked in an underground mechanised operations for a minimum of 10 years with increasing levels of responsibilities;
  • A post graduate qualification in Business Management or relevant experience would be advantageous;
  • Botswana underground blasting licence;

  • Registered with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) of Botswana;
  • Experience in mine construction and development within an underground mining environment;
  • Proven contract negotiation skills as well as contractor management experience, specific to an underground hard rock mining environment;
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organisation;
  • Strong planning and analytical skills;
  • Proven people management skills; and A team player and experience in managing a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural team.
