The Practice
SPANA was established in 1923. It is the world’s leading charity in providing free veterinary care, treatment, advice and education to the working animals of the world’s poorest communities.
We have a mobile clinic which travels 100km radius around the Greater Maun area, Ngamiland, Botswana.
The Role
You can make a difference! – Come and be an advocate, help the lives of our working animals, the livelihoods of their owners and in- turn the rural communities around who greatly depend on them.
This is a voluntary position for 3 months (anticipated start November 18)
You will be working with the mobile clinic travelling within a 100km radius, providing free veterinary care, treatment, advice and education amongst the local indigenous community. A driver/translator and technician will travel with you during the clinics, where we most commonly treat wounds, sometimes caused by wildlife such as leopards and crocodiles, to saddle and harness wounds caused by ill-fitting saddlery.
We provide routine vaccinations, worming and any treatment that is necessary whilst out in the field.

You must be enthusiastic about working with Equids, compassionate about welfare and education, considerate about cultural beliefs and practices,
To have the ability to be adaptable to challenging environments and situations.
The Package
Accommodation and basic living expenses will be paid for, basic hours between 08:00-17:00h Monday to Friday, but with the ability to be flexible.
Botswana is the ‘Last Eden’ for wildlife, so try to take advantage of some time on safari in the Okavango Delta and the Bush whilst you are here.
Location
Maun is the safari central of Botswana and fifth largest town in Botswana, but otherwise appropriately named by the locals as ‘Donkey Town’. It is historically a frontier town with a population of 55,000 and a donkey population of 25,000.
Maun has rapidly spread along the Thamalakane river, where there is traditional and modern housing, local grocery and supplies shops and an international airport.
