**Job Title:** MECHANIC PLANT SUPERVISOR – HEAVY CONSTRUCTION PLANT & DRILL RIGS

**Job Purpose:**
To supervise, coordinate and participate in the maintenance, repair and safe operation of heavy construction plant equipment and Hydraulic Drill Rigs, ensuring maximum equipment availability, compliance with safety standards, and cost-effective maintenance practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage mechanics and plant maintenance personnel.
  • Allocate work, plan daily tasks and monitor productivity.
  • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to subordinates.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and enforce discipline where required.
  • Oversee and perform preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on:
  • Heavy construction equipment (excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, dump trucks, etc.)
  • Drill rigs (Top Hammer, rotary, percussion, and related systems)
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic faults.
  • Ensure breakdowns are attended to promptly and effectively.
  • Verify quality of workmanship before equipment is returned to service.
  • Develop and manage maintenance schedules for all Plant and Drill Rigs.
  • Coordinate shutdowns and major repairs with operations.
  • Track service intervals, inspections and legal compliance requirements.
  • Enforce all safety procedures and company policies.
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and mine/construction site rules.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and safe work practices.
  • Control inventory of spare parts, tools and consumables.
  • Compile parts requisitions and liaise with suppliers and OEMs.
  • Monitor maintenance costs and reduce downtime through proactive planning.
  • Maintain maintenance records, service histories and inspection reports.
  • Compile breakdown reports and root cause analyses.
  • Submit weekly/monthly maintenance and availability reports.
  • Ensure equipment meets legal, safety and manufacturer standards.
  • Assist with commissioning and decommissioning of Plant and Drill Rigs.
  • Participate in audits and inspections.

Requirements

  • Trade Test Certificate: Diesel Mechanic / Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic / Fitter & Turner (or equivalent).
  • Supervisory or management qualification will be advantageous.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Heavy Plant and Drill Rig maintenance.
  • At least 5 years’ supervisory experience in a similar environment.
  • Proven experience with hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems on Mobile Plant and Drill Rigs.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic ability.
  • Leadership and people management skills.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong safety awareness and risk management.
  • Computer literacy (maintenance systems, reports, MS Excel).
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet production deadlines.
  • Must be medically fit for site work.
  • Able to work in outdoor and industrial environments.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and attend breakdowns when required.
  • Results-driven and accountable.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ethical and safety-conscious.
  • Proactive problem solver.
