SPECIALISED ELECTRICAL TECHNICIAN (SINKING/WINDERS/CONSTRUCTION) – Ums Botswana 269 views

UMS Botswana Pty Ltd (a division of the UMS Group) is busy with an underground vertical shaft sinking project with JDS Energy & Mining Inc. (the EPCM contractor) for Lucara Botswana (Pty) Ltd at the Karowe Diamond Mine at Letlhakane in the Boteti sub-district. This exciting project is currently in the Main Sink contract phase. Shaft sinking and underground construction activities require critical skills and experience with an expert understanding of sinking methodologies, underground construction, mine health and safety, as well as contract management knowledge, which is essential. We are currently searching for suitably qualified and experienced candidates to be considered for the below positions in Letlhakane. Please note that all positions are project based.

The Specialised Electrical Technician (Sinking, Winders or Construction) will be responsible for providing specialised technical services required for installation and maintenance on all electrical infrastructure and electrical systems used at the sinking construction project. This candidate will report to the Sinking Specialised Shift Foreman with a dual reporting line to the Technical Engineering Supervisor, Electrical.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing technical services with special focus on winders, shaft stages and shaft electrical cables.
  • Repairs and maintenance of electrical machines, instruments or plant equipment.
  • Daily reporting and recording of work completed.
  • Team coordination and supervision.
  • Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) Compliance.

Requirements

  • BGCSE or equivalent qualification plus relevant Electrician Trade Certificate.
  • Additional certificates in other engineering areas will be an added advantage (i.e. basic skills in boiler making, fitting etc.)
  • Blasting certificate and monitor certificate will be an advantage.
  • Minimum 3- 5 years’ experience as an electrician in a sinking construction environment, with specific focus on winders, if applicable.
  • Knowledge and previous experience in the following areas are advantageous: Shaft sinking, Rock Engineering, Operation of LHD and Drill Rig, Drilling, installation of support, concrete lining, cover drilling, cementation, pipe installation, shaft equipping.
  • Practical electrical knowledge on specialised plant and equipment used during sinking construction projects, inclusive of all electrical and engineering work related to sinking construction and equipping phases.
  • Knowledge of shaft sinking and health & safety standards and regulations is essential.
