Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are typically required for a Head of Treasury and Finance role in Botswana?

A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Economics is essential; many employers prefer a Master’s degree or professional certification such as ACCA, CIMA, or CFA. The Bank of Botswana and Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) recognise these qualifications, and local regulatory awareness — including adherence to the Botswana Financial Intelligence Agency (BFIA) guidelines — is expected.

What does a typical day look like for someone in this role within a Botswana-based investment holding group?

Daily responsibilities include managing group liquidity, overseeing foreign exchange and interest rate risk in line with Botswana Pula (BWP) exposure, and ensuring compliance with the Bank of Botswana’s prudential requirements. You’ll also coordinate with local banks, prepare board-level financial reports aligned with IFRS and Botswana’s Companies Act, and liaise with BURS on tax-related treasury matters.

How does the work culture and employer expectations differ in Botswana compared to other countries?

Botswana workplaces value respect for hierarchy, consensus-driven decision-making, and strong interpersonal relationships — punctuality and formal communication with senior leadership are expected. Employers appreciate cultural fluency, including understanding of local business etiquette, tribal affiliations’ influence on stakeholder engagement, and sensitivity to public sector collaboration norms common in state-linked investment groups.

What realistic career progression paths exist after serving as Head of Treasury and Finance in a Botswana citizen-owned investment group?

Progression often leads to Group CFO or Executive Director roles, especially if you demonstrate success in scaling treasury operations across Botswana’s multi-sector investment landscape. Some professionals transition into advisory roles with the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) or serve on boards of state-owned enterprises, leveraging both technical expertise and local governance experience.

What benefits — such as leave, medical aid, and pension — are commonly offered in this role in Botswana?

Employers typically provide 25–30 days annual leave, fully subsidised private medical aid through providers like Medshield or BONF, and mandatory membership in the Botswana National Pension Scheme (BNPS) with additional voluntary pension contributions. Some groups offer housing allowances or vehicle packages, particularly for executives reporting directly to the Board or CEO.

How should I apply, and what do employers in Botswana specifically look for in candidates for this role?

Applications are usually submitted via email or local job portals like Best Jobs Botswana or the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) portal, with emphasis on certified academic documents and BICA/ACCA registration proof. Employers prioritise candidates with proven experience managing treasury functions under Botswana’s regulatory framework, fluency in local banking systems (e.g., BoB’s RTGS), and demonstrable success in supporting citizen empowerment mandates aligned with Vision 2036 and the Economic Diversification Drive.
