Frequently Asked Questions
What educational or certification requirements are needed for a Night Watchman post in Ghanzi District?
You typically need at least a Junior Certificate (Form 3) or BGCSE, a valid Omang, and a clean criminal record. Basic security training or prior guard experience is an advantage, though the Ministry may provide orientation for new recruits.
What are the main day-to-day responsibilities of a Night Watchman?
Your core duties include patrolling the premises, controlling entry and exit points, and monitoring surveillance or alarms as directed. You must also record incidents, check for fire or safety hazards, and complete accurate shift logs for the following team.
What is the work culture and expectations for security staff in Botswana's public service?
Punctuality and reliability are non-negotiable, especially for night shifts in remote areas like Ghanzi District. Guards work independently but must follow Ministry protocols, respect the chain of command, and wear the issued uniform properly at all times.
What realistic career progression opportunities exist for a Night Watchman?
Starting as a night watchman can lead to senior security positions such as team leader or supervisor after several years of good conduct and service. You may also apply for internal Ministry vacancies or take short security management courses to boost your chances of promotion.
What benefits are typically provided for security roles in the Botswana government?
Government positions generally include a pension contribution, medical aid, and paid annual and sick leave. You may also receive a uniform or shift allowance, but these vary by employer, and housing or transport is not automatically provided.
How should a job seeker apply for this role, and what do employers look for?
Watch for the Ministry's recruitment notice on the official Government of Botswana careers portal or in local newspapers, then submit your application before the deadline. Employers look for honesty, physical fitness, a clean criminal record, and a completed application with reachable references.
