Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to become a Professional Hunter or Guide in Botswana?

You must complete training at an accredited institution like Botswana Wildlife Training Institute and obtain a Professional Hunter's Licence or Professional Guide's Licence from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. A minimum of a secondary school certificate is typically required, plus specialized training in firearms handling, bushcraft, and wildlife knowledge. First aid certification and a valid driver's licence are also essential.

What does a typical day look like for a Professional Hunter or Guide?

Days start before dawn with equipment checks and safety briefings for clients, followed by tracking game or leading photographic safaris in Botswana's concessions and reserves. You will navigate diverse terrain, identify wildlife behavior, and ensure client safety throughout the excursion. Evenings involve camp duties, logbook entries, and preparing for the next day's activities.

How is the work culture different for guides in Botswana compared to other countries?

Botswana's guiding culture emphasizes deep respect for the bush, strict adherence to ethical hunting and conservation laws, and close relationships with local communities and landholders. Hierarchical respect for senior guides and PHs is strong, and patience with international clients from varied backgrounds is expected. The work is seasonal and demanding, with long hours during peak tourism months from June to October.

What career progression opportunities exist for licensed hunters and guides in Botswana?

Entry-level guides can advance to Senior Professional Hunter or camp manager roles with experience and additional certifications in specialized areas like dangerous game or bird hunting. Some transition into concession management, wildlife consultancy, or training roles at institutions like BWTI. Building a reputation with international outfitters can also lead to freelance or overseas opportunities.

What benefits are typically offered to Professional Hunters and Guides in Botswana?

Employers usually provide accommodation, meals, and transport during contract periods, with medical aid and personal accident insurance commonly included. Annual leave varies by employer but often aligns with the low tourism season. Pension contributions depend on whether you are permanently employed or on seasonal contracts, which is common in this industry.

How do I apply for the Specialist Licensing Examination and what do employers look for?

Contact the Department of Wildlife and National Parks or Botswana Wildlife Training Institute for examination schedules and application requirements, which include proof of training and practical experience. Employers prioritize candidates with proven tracking skills, firearm proficiency, language abilities especially in English and conversational Setswana, and a clean criminal record. Strong references from established safari operators significantly improve your prospects.
