REF: AS005: SENIOR LABORATORY SCIENTIST
Purpose of the Job
Reporting to the Chief Clinical Officer, the successful candidates will be responsible for planning and developing long and short terms, leading laboratory team of professionals and coordinating all the activities of the laboratory to ensure effective implementation and adherence to the quality management system.
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:-
- Develops laboratory resources plans i.e. budgets, manpower and equipment plans following analysis and establishment of both the section’s and hospital laboratory needs to ensure that there is adequate resources to enable the hospital to achieve its mandate.
- Oversees the implementation of the Laboratory and relevant hospital’s cost effective resources plans (short and long term), cascades same to the Laboratory team to ensure objectives are achieved.
- Establishes strategic partnership with key stakeholders such as other laboratories, internal customers and professional bodies to ensure that sectional requirements are aligned to meet patients’ needs.
- Establishes strategic partnership with key stakeholders, provides guidance on laboratory technical matters and protocols.
- Designs and implements contingency plans for different services offered to ensure that essential services are always available particularly during emergency situations in or outside the hospital such as advise on referral laboratories and monitors their quality of service
- Provides related laboratory clinical advice with respect to laboratory services including the examination options, and interpretation of examination results.
- Coordinates preparation of laboratory reports, analyses and establishes trends and produce appropriate recommendations to effect improvements in quality of services offered.
- Responsible for professional, scientific, consultative or advisory, organizational, administrative and educational matters relevant to the services offered by the laboratory.
- Coordinates the Laboratory programs/work schedules in order to:
- ensure that specimen are analyses timeously and results provided within stipulated standards and timelines
- ensure availability of accurate monthly financial statements in order to ascertain the viability of the business
- Ascertains laboratory suppliers and overall management of stock including and referral laboratories.
- addresses and ensures staff members and patients’ complaints and suggestions are effectively attended to
- Contributes meaningfully in consultative hospital committees and provide committees with information /advice in pursuit of improving quality of services offered by the hospital.
- Manages staff and generates training programs for the Laboratory team to ensure advanced level of skill in maintaining equipment to enable accurate diagnosis leading to improved patient outcome
- Maintains productive relationship with other team members from other departments and adheres strictly to professional code of conduct and ensuring timely and effective communication to ensure positive patient outcome.
Minimum Job Requirements
Education
Diploma / Bachelors of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent
Experience
Seven (7) years as a Laboratory Scientists in a healthcare facility, three of which should be at supervisory level.
Competency Requirements
- Integrity supported by excellent work ethics
- Indepth Knowledge of Medical Laboratory equipment and relevant Quality Management System
- Ability to internalise the hospital values and quality management systems
- Financial awareness

- Relationship building skills and ability to work with others
- Ability to work with hospital information system
- Customer care (Patient centered and provision of quality service)
