The Attorney General’s Chambers is an extra Ministerial Department under the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security. It exists to prosecute all criminal cases at the public instance, prosecute, defend or settle civil cases on behalf of Government, draft legislation, produce law reports, negotiate and draft commercial and international agreements and provide sound legal advice to Government, in a prompt, professional and responsible manner.

To that end, the Attorney General’s Chambers seeks the services of talented, self-driven, experienced and highly motivated citizens of Botswana to fill the following vacant position:
VACANCY: Government Attorney
VACANCY CIRCULAR NO: 1 of 2019

DIVISION: Civil Litigation Division
TENABLE AT: Gaborone
TENURE: 24 – 60 months contract with an option for renewal
SALARY SCALE: F1 P553, 032.00 per annum.
LEAVE: 30 working days per annum
QUALIFICATION:
•Bachelor of Laws.
•Applicants must be currently admitted to practice in the Courts of Botswana in terms of the Legal Practitioner’s Act (Cap 61:01).
EXPERIENCE:
At least sixteen (16) years of experience, two (2) of which should have been at F2 level or its equivalent. Applicants must be qualified to be appointed to the Office of a Judge of the High Court.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The primary purpose is to oversee and manage litigation on behalf of the entire government in the Republic of Botswana.
DUTIES:
1. To prosecute and defend civil suits by or against (Government) Public Officers in their official capacity especially in complex constitutional and administrative matters and matters of national importance.
2. To represent government on policy matters and advises on legal implications of such policies including Cabinet Memoranda.
3. To appear before international tribunals to defend Government position as well as decisions made by any State Organ.
4. To direct and supervise the conduct of civil litigation by or against Government, all defence to civil proceedings in favour of or against Government, State Organs, departments, namely applicants/actions in delict or contract, petitions and constitutional and administrative reviews as well as labour.
5. To direct and supervise the conduct of all arbitrations in which Government or any other State organ is involved as a Defendant or Applicant.
6. Responsible for the general coordination of functions of the division including adherence to strategic plan as well as Vision 2036.
7. Undertakes any other related duties as required to meet the exigencies of the service.

BENEFITS:
• Optional contributory Medical Aid Scheme (Government pays 50%, Employee 50%)
• Gratuity at 30% of Salary for the contract period
• Robe Allowance at P3, 708.00 per annum
• Entertainment Allowance at P11, 818.45 per annum
• Housing and upkeep Allowance at 2% of basic salary
• Scarce Skill Allowance at 35% of basic salary
