Minimum Qualifications
• Associate member of the Insurance Institute of South Africa or equivalent
• Minimum of 3 years experience in the underwriting department of an insurance company
• Business degree
Job Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager. The underwriting manager is primarily responsible for providing leadership, support and guidance to the underwriting team. S/He is in charge of ensuring that the underwriting team complies with the goals, objectives and standards of the organization in order to meet customer satisfaction and deadlines. S/He does this by developing, interpreting and implementing guidelines for the underwriting team. The underwriting manager assesses the risk posed by a client to the company.
Key Performance Areas
Business Management.
Work closely with the Business Development Manager and Senior Management on planning and budgeting for the book of business, tracking and reporting performance to plan, and developing a clear view of market conditions and competitive landscape.
Underwriter Leadership.
Lead a team of Underwriters, handling referrals for authorisation, coaching and developing direct reports in line with company’s performance management policy.
Underwriting Execution.
Responsible for the new and renewal underwriting execution, including selecting risks in line with Alpha Directs’ strategy and underwriting guidelines, operating within authority and documentation guidelines and following up on accounts and closing new business. Conduct and report on quarterly self-audit.
Broker Partnership.
Development, maintenance and management of broker partnerships within assigned territory; development of strategies and goals for brokers and tracking of progress; and positioning Alpha Direct within a brokerage agency, including:
• Deliver exceptional, timely, complete and accurate service to brokers
• Develop trusted, respected and lasting relationships with broker partners
• Work with brokers to craft best solutions for their clients
• Share knowledge and best practices with brokers
Business Analysis
• To analyse the impact of process changes and provide the cost implications of process redesign, adjusting budgets in accordance with changes in service provision if necessary.
• To contribute numerical and /or graphical information that will form part of Board Dashboards or information showing progress on the strategy.
• Development of underwriting policies and procedures within the Underwriting Team and the organisation.
• Leading the development of Systems for growth and sustainability of the business of Alpha Direct.
Risk Management
• Drive the departmental risk registers in conjunction with the company risk coordinator.
• Drives the implementation of the departmental mitigations controls.
• Ensures process owners within the department closes all audit by both internal and external audit.
Re-Insurance Oversight
• Participating in the negotiation, review, and renewal of Alpha Direct’s re-Insurance treaties to ensure the best outcome for the company.
• Ensuring that all risks that require facultative reinsurance cover are placed within the guidelines of the company.
