VACANCY: JUDGE OF THE HIGH COURT (4 POSTS)

The Judicial Service Commission invites suitably qualified citizens to apply for the four (4) positions of Judge of the High Court.

VACANCY CIRCULAR NO. 8 OF 2018

Salary Scale: F0 (630,432) per annum
Leave: 30 working days per annum.

Benefits:

(1) Free furnished residential accommodation or housing allowance of P13 905.00 per month where there is no official residence provided.
(2) 50% subsidy for utilities.
(3) Optional contributory Medical Aid Scheme. (Government pays 50% and Employee 50%).
(4) 35% Scarce Skill Allowance.
(5) Non Contributory pension.
(6) Robbing Allowance at P 309.00 per month.
(7) Entertainment Allowance at P 13 589.70 per annum.
(8) Chauffer driven motor vehicle.

Qualifications:

To qualify for appointment, the applicant is required by Section 96 of the Constitution to:

(1) Hold, or must have held office, as Judge of a Court having unlimited jurisdiction in Civil and criminal matters in Botswana, in a Commonwealth Country or in any country outside the Commonwealth that may be prescribed by Parliament or a court having jurisdiction in appeals from such a court; or
(2) Be qualified to practice as an advocate or attorney in such a court and has been qualified for not less than ten years to practice as an advocate or attorney in such a court.
(3) Be qualified to practice as an advocate or attorney and has had experience in the teaching of law in a recognized university for not less than ten years.
(4) Be a Chief Magistrate who has held that office for not less than five years.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The main duties of a Judge shall include the following:
(1) Presiding over all criminal and civil cases, including appeals from courts below the High Court in the hierarchy.

(2) Hearing all applications brought before the court for determination of any issue, including constitutional issues; and
(3) Any other duties, as may from time to time, be assigned by the Chief Justice or His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana.
