LABORATORY TECHNICIAN- ZOOLOGY/ECOLOGY/ANIMAL BIOLOGY

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To prepare equipment for laboratory/workshop classes, ensure that the equipment within the premises is in working order and maintain inventory of stocks and equipment loans issued from assigned laboratory/workshop.

To provide technical expertise to enable the laboratory to function eectively while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION:

• Diploma in Zoology/Ecology/Animal Biology.
• Bachelor’s Degree with specialization Zoology/Ecology/Animal Biology in will bean added advantage.

• Ability to communicate effectively in English-both written and verbal
• Ability to develop good working relationships with students and staff
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team
• Experience with techniques in area of expertise
• Experience with equipment in area of expertise

CORE COMPETENCIES

• Must have keen interest in animals and experience in husbandry/culturing
• Must have awareness of the ethical issues surrounding animal husbandry and animal welfare
• A good understanding of animal diversity, behavior and collection methods
• Experience in collection of animals from the wild
• Interest in animal breeding and dissection techniques
• Must be familiar with various preservation skills of animal specimen and slide preparations
• Must be familiar with operating physiological and environmental parameter measurement equipment
• Cleanliness culture, good attention to detail and high levels of concentration

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years post qualification relevant experience in a Zoology/Ecology/Animal Biology field as a Technician or Diploma with five years of relevant experience.

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – BIOCHEMISTRY

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

• To prepare equipment for laboratory/workshop classes, ensure that the equipment within the premises is in working order and maintain inventory of stocks and equipment loans issued from assigned laboratory/workshop.
• To provide technical expertise to enable the laboratory to function effectively while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION:
• Diploma in Biochemistry
• Bachelor’s Degree with specialization in Biochemistry will be an added advantage.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS
• Ability to communicate effectively in English-both written and verbal
• Ability to develop good working relationships with students and staff
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team
• Experience with techniques in area of expertise
• Experience with equipment in area of expertise

CORE COMPETENCIES
• Must be familiar with operating equipment that includes HPLC, GC-MS and FPLC.
• Must have experience with techniques such as fluorescence microscopy, PCR, electrophoresis and biochemical assays
• Highly analytical with an ability to improve and streamline complex work processes as well as interpret data generated from experiments
• Demonstrated ability to conduct standardized biochemical tests and laboratory analyses to evaluate to evaluate the quantity or quality of physical or chemical substances in various biological samples
• A good understanding of preparing and using standard solutions for various tests.

Experience:
Two years post qualification relevant experience in Biochemistry fieldwork is required.
