Job Purpose

To aid communication through translating written or spoken material into one or more other languages whilst ensuring that meaning and context are maintained.

Principal Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Language Translation
  • Translates messages simultaneously or consecutively into specified languages, orally or in writing whilst maintaining message content, context, and style as much as possible.
  • Listens to speakers’ statements to determine meanings and to prepare translations, using electronic listening systems as necessary.
  • Translates a variety of documents including literary, legal, research, technical, scientific, educational, and commercial materials into specified languages
  • Compiles terminology and information to be used in translations, including technical terms such as those for legal or engineering material.

  • Checks translations of technical terms and terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation revisions.
  • Refers to reference materials, such as dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopaedias, and computerized terminology banks, as needed to ensure translation accuracy
  • Identifies and resolves conflict related to the meanings of words, concepts or practices.
  • Consults with subject matter experts and other colleagues in order to understand specialized concepts and translate them appropriately
