Job profile summary:

Deliver strategic R&I technology projects within the following requirements;

• Ensure team members maintain safe and compliant operations in accordance with BOBS standard, Code of Conduct and HR requirements
• Oversee and manage project financial budgets as per the requirements of the fuel and lubricant businesses
• Foster talent and develop the capability of members of the Advanced Fuel Efficiency Research team
• Create enduring long term value for the business
• Contribute to a continually refreshed innovation pipeline

As a team leader and budget holder, ensure departmental budgets are managed and report immediately any deviation from these so appropriate adjustments can be made.

Have a full understanding of people resource requirements, approved and actual headcount, contract resources and will manage rigorously within approved headcount plans. Listen to and engage regularly with the team on a one on one basis, team meetings and through other ad-hoc opportunities. Hold the team accountable for following all applicable policies, processes and procedures. Enact team leader accountabilities as defined in the R&M people book.

• Assist the Project Manager and the Data Manager in delivering strategic technology value to the Fuels and Lubricants Businesses by ensuring IP value is created from R&l activities.
• Recruit, develop and lead the Team according to company Values and Behaviors by ensuring each team member is aware of their own career prospects by giving them honest and constructive feedback focused on their development opportunities and ensuring they have in place a revised PDP, in accordance with the My HR expectations, that accurately reflects their aspirations and development needs.

Direct or advises on projects with internal and external partners, such as testing facilities, consulting engineers, automotive manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers

• Assist the Research Manager and Head of Research to develop and execute a revised R&l strategy aligned to wider business needs. Ensure that the appropriate resource is allocated across the project activities within the Team and that activity is managed.

Job Purpose

The Expert Team Leader is a significant technology management role within Massyn Logistics (Pty) Ltd. Reporting directly to the Operations Manager; the team leader will manage technology focused on rapidly evaluating concepts and new demonstrations, such as cutting-edge experimental methods, novel chemistries and digital techniques. These options will become new tools and ideas for more effective delivery of the R&I strategic portfolio, informing an innovation pipeline for future years.

The team leader will work closely with the Operations Manager towards the Downstream Mindsets and agile ways of working across R&l, managing the flexible resourcing across the portfolio. They will also actively run projects and provide expert technical input to the strategic portfolio. This role provides opportunities to develop both technical and management skills.

Key Accountabilities

• Manage the team within R&I to initiate and deliver projects in the R&l strategic portfolio, including leading own projects as a technical expert
• Ensure team members maintain safe, compliant operations per BOBS standard. Code of Conduct and HR requirements
• Champion the Downstream Mindsets, Values & Behaviours and Leadership Expectations; recruit, develop and lead the team according to these principles
• Assist the Research Managers in managing the integrated R&l budget
• Give proactive technical coaching across R&I to enable successful delivery of the strategic portfolio
• Assist the R&I Vice President and Research Managers in developing and executing the R&I strategy
• Assist the Research Managers and the R&I advisor to ensure IP value and business value is created from R&l activities
• Raise the profile of R&I internally and externally through the support of customer relationships

• Develop and maintain strong collaborative internal and external working relationships of importance.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Post graduate degree in chemistry, tribology or mechanical, automotive or chemical engineering, or related field.
• Preferable experience: fuels and lubricants industry; or research and development of formulated products
• Desirable expertise: new component discovery, use of data analytics, first principles modelling, scale up from concept stage; new rig development
• Experience of delivering insights and direction to a technology organisation
• Agile mindset
• Team leadership experience
• Capability to coach and mentor technical staff in area of expertise.
• Strong communication skills, bridging all levels of seniority and technical background
