Job Summary

To develop and provide a comprehensive periopera­tive service to patients

Minimum Requirements

• Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Theatre Nurs­ing
• Five (5) years post qualification experience
• Registration with Botswana NursingCouncil

Pre-appointment Training

• Microsoft applications and use of internet

Key Effectiveness Areas

• Recommends and incorporates cost saving initia­tives into budgets
• Conducts pre-operative and post-operative visits to surgical patients to provide information on the specific procedure to be performed, support and reassurance to patients as necessary
• Coordinates preparations for theatre lists taking into cognisance the surgical procedures to be per­formed
• Aids the surgeon during surgical operations and acts as advocate for the patient
• Prepares packs for and coordinates sterilisation of packs, sets and instruments used during proce­dures for theatre and other hospital units
• Monitors and interprets the testing of sterilising machines for efficiency
• Ensures that control of infections is maintained by overseeing the testing of equipment and environ­mental cleanliness with laboratory prepared tests
• Maintains stock levels within the nursing unit and monitorsstock usage
• Records use of stock on charge sheets
• Coordinates and monitors the implementation of safety, health and environmental programs in area of responsibility taking cognisance of all legal requirements
