SAFETY OFFICER wanted at UMS Botswana Pty Ltd

UMS Botswana Pty Ltd (a division of the UMS Group) will shortly be commencing an underground shaft sinking project with JDS Energy & Mining Inc. (the EPCM contractor) for Lucara Botswana (Pty) Ltd at the Karowe Diamond Mine near Letlhakane in the Boteti sub-district.

Shaft sinking and underground construction are highly specialised activities and an expert understanding of sinking methodologies, underground construction, mine health and safety as well as contract management knowledge is essential.

We require suitably qualified and experienced candidates to be considered for the oversight of the earthworks and civil construction scope of work in preparation of shaft sinking construction activities. Please note that positions are project-based in Letlhakane:

JOB SUMMARY

The Safety Officer is responsible for coordinating safety on site through the implementation of safety and risk control processes and procedures, the provision of safety advisory and reporting services and the maintenance and implementation of the health and safety information system on site to create a safety-first mindset that ensures a safe working environment and compliance to all company and legal requirements. This candidate will report to the earthworks and civil supervisor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Safety risk & incident management
• Safety capacity building & awareness
• SHEQ reporting and administration
• ISO 45001:2018 SHE management system implementation
• Safety coaching in the workplace
• Coordination of safety initiatives
• Participates in HSE management system audits
• Incident investigation

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Relevant qualification in Safety Management
• Blasting Certificate or Trade Certificate.
• Comsoc 1 & 2 or similar
• HIRA – Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Certificate.
• First Aid Level 1 Certificate (NQF Level 3), or similar.
• ISO 45001:2018 SHE Management System.
• Basic Environmental (ISO 14001) Systems and Auditing Certificates.
• 5 years’ post qualification experience, in the capacity as a Health and Safety/ Quality Officer in a mining construction/ shaft sinking project.
