STUDENTS’ HEALTH AND WELLNESS OFFICER REF: SA 21/03

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To drive the University’s strategic theme of ‘Academic quality and student reputation and ensuring student’s high performance. The position aims at provision of professional and confidential health promotion, education and other related initiatives to support student’s success at BIUST.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in the most relevant health profession such as Biological Behavioral and Social Sciences. A degree in one of the following would be highly preferred, Nursing, Health promotion, Health Studies, Public Health, Dietetics/Nutrition, Clinical Social Work. Must have a post graduate Diploma in HIV and AIDS Management or Kitso HIV and AIDS training.

• A Master’s degree in Public Health or Health related professions will be an added advantage.
• Should be registered with Botswana Health Professional Council and must hold a current and valid license to practice.

Experience

At least three (3) years post-qualification experience in a higher education institution. BQA accreditation as a trainer would be an added advantage.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Act as ‘first point of contact’ for staff and students who require assistance on health-related issues; that will include but not limited to sexual and reproductive health, body weight, Nutrition, HIV and AIDS education, and chronic lifestyle health conditions.

• Provision of non-clinical health services and education, addressing issues associated with health risks such as risky sexual behaviors, unhealthy eating habits, alcohol, drugs and other substance misuse, as well as sedimentary non-physical exercise lifestyle.
• Development and delivery of health education, promotion and prevention initiatives that create health awareness of individuals and groups at BIUST, to empower them to make healthy choices and decisions.

• Provision of HIV and AIDS education, testing, counselling and support; as well as implement the University’s HIV/AIDS policy alignment to the national and international policies and guidelines.
• Participate in committees and taskforces and liaise with external agencies to facilitate and advocate for holistic and comprehensive students’ health wellness.

• Marketing of health promotion and prevention through development and production of leaflets, posters, videos, brochures to aid and enhance health promotion in different environments.
• Promote and raise awareness of the dangers of negative attitudes and feelings on mental health balance, during student inductions, workshops, etc.
