Purpose of the Role

To dispense medicines, provide drug information and manage pharmaceutical & surgical stock

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Review patients medication(s) for efficacy, adherence, knowledge , side effects and advises other clinicians for further intervention as identified.
  • Consult, determine subjective diagnosis and recommend treatment for patients within scope of practice or refer to other clinicians for management.
  • Interprets prescriptions to ensure they comply with pharmaceutical standards and law.
  • Evaluates appropriacy, rationality and compatibility of prescribed drug treatment and intervenes by liasing with clinicians for alternative or optimised care.
  • Educates and counsels patients on their disease condition. medicines and associated side effects and demonstrate the correct use of medical devices to optimise treatment outcomes.
  • Reconstitutes, and labels products to meet legal requirements and principles of Good Manufacturing Practice & provide instructions on correct use.
  • Conducts ward substores audits to ensure availability, safety and compliance with applicable pharmaceutical standards and relevant laws.
  • Generate requisitions for Anti-Retroviral Therapy medicines for the MASA programme from source and ensures receipts into the Information Management System.
  • Prepares admixtures, compounds medication and labels products to meet legal requirements and principles of Good Manufacturing Practice & provide instructions on correct use.
  • Implements stock management processes, including monitoring and processing of short dated and expired items.
  • Promotes rational prescribing and reduces medication errors by advising clinicians on various medications.

Other Job Responsibilities

  • Recommends and incorporates cost saving initiatives into budgets
  • Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance
  • Establishes and maintains Business Partner relationships with all key stakeholders to facilitate the optimal functioning of the functional area
  • Adheres to all safety, health and environmental policies and procedures in area of responsibility

Education

  • Diploma in Pharmacy Technology

Experience

3 years post qualification experience
