Head of Retail and Business Banking, Business Risk, Governance and Control

Overall job purpose

To ensure a sound internal control environment within the Retail and Business Banking function through proactive identification of risks, through regular review and testing.

Main accountabilities

• Ensure that the Risk and Control Assessment related to Retail and Business Banking are relevant and current and that the controls established are complied with thorough periodic testing
• Prepare work plans for reviewing processes across Retail and Business Banking to identify and analyse risks
• Put in place a methodology to assess, identify, measure, monitor, report and remediate risk.
• Manage the process of snap checks and ensure that they are all being performed
• Ensure core business processes and workflows are redesigned as necessary to improve productivity, cycle times and quality in support of the organisations’ mission and reduce costs.
• Ensure periodic compilation of key risk reports and returns
• Ensure that Key Risk Indicators for High-Risk processes are regularly monitored to enable proactive mitigation of any material deterioration in the control environment
• Remediate control exceptions emanating from checks and ensure that agreed corrective actions address the root cause and that agreed corrective actions are tracked to closure
• Create risk awareness within Retail and Business Banking at all levels of staff for staff to understand all items of risk relating to their jobs as well as how their jobs relate to the various acts and accords
• Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Absa operational risk framework and internal Absa policies and standards.
• Provide strategic direction to the team in line with the strategic direction of the Bank and Group

Education and experience required

• A degree in business or equivalent
• Audit experience
• Master’s degree and experience in Risk Management/relevant associations in risk management will be an added advantage
