Main purpose of the job:
To ensure that end-user problems are resolved quickly, maximum computing systems availability, and high level of performance of computer and peripheral equipment software and hardware at all times. Co-ordinates bulk data capture, scanning services, end-user support, computer security, and access control services to maintain the required levels of service and user support.
Duties:
(i) Formulates policy in relation to acquisition, maintenance, system access, upgrading, evaluation, performance testing, and software purchases for computer systems and peripherals in the University. (ii) Confers with the University support, faculties, and departments and finance personnel to determine the need for computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment. Advises in making major hardware and software acquisitions, and in establishing IT policies for the University. (iii) Supervises and co-ordinates activities of employees engaged in providing support services to users, in accordance with the University Policies and applicable laws. (iv) Assigns tasks to staff to facilitate quality systems support, service, and maintenance. (v) Directs on-the-job training for new employees to ensure that they acquire work-related skills within a specified period. (vi) Confers with users and support staff to determine ease of access to information sources and performance of central servers, databases and security. (vii) Co-ordinates the configuration of new hardware and software to provide optimum system performance. (viii) Co-ordinates evaluation of user requirements, system capabilities, hardware performance, response times and security. (ix) Co-ordinates evaluation and selection of new software and hardware to determine usefulness and compatibility with existing software and hardware. (x) Evaluates proposed projects to assess adequacy of existing hardware, and recommends purchase of equipment. (xi) Controls use of software and hardware to ensure conformance to license agreements and copyright laws. (xii) Directs and analyses system procedures and plans, and directs implementation of control procedures.
Position Requirements:
Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, or an equivalent qualification. A minimum of five years overall experience in the computing field with three years experience in managing a user support section in a large organisation. Knowledge and practical experience of UNIX, Oracle or any relational database management system, PC Hardware and Software is essential. If qualification is in a non-related discipline, additional practical and/or specific training in UNIX and Oracle or any relational database management system skills may be required.
