The role and responsibility of the Principal Engineer – Mechanical is to lead the definition and the establishment of corporate standards, specifications and designs in Mechanical Engineering. The aim is to deliver improved equipment performance (reliability, availability and cost) on all sites, in line with business aspirations and industry benchmarks.
Key to this role is focusing on people in order to build capacity and capability and to implement high-value processes.
Minimum Requirements
- Engineering Degree – Mechanical Engineering
- Ten (10) years post qualification engineering experience in a mining environment with exposure to mining infrastructure including mobile and fixed plants.
- Registration with Botswana Engineers Registration Board with valid practicing License.
- Middle Management Development Programme or equivalent management training.
Key activities
Financial Effectiveness
- Analyses the function’s financial needs.
- Develops budget and ensures financial resources are sufficient to meet business needs.
- Manages and controls allocated funds and operates within approved parameters.
Operational Effectiveness
- Translates business aspirations into appropriate corporate standards, specifications and designs regarding Mechanical Engineering.
- Leads the development and manages Debswana Mechanical Engineering standards, specifications and designs to improve equipment performance across the operations.
- Leads the development of capacity and capability of people in the Mechanical Engineering discipline by:
- Developing the problem-solving ability of engineering workforce
- Driving objective recruitment and selection of best available people
- Comparing role profiles and skills matrix to realities at the operations; ensuring all employees are performing to standard.
- Drives collaboration and innovation throughout the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
- Leads the development of improved engineering risk identification and mitigation in the field of engineering.
- Leads the identification of best practice approaches and standards and looks for opportunities to replicate in Debswana in the field of engineering.
- Undertakes constant checks at sites and seeks to expand engineers’ ability to find practical, cost-effective and sustainable solutions.
- Reviews operational performance within the engineering discipline and makes recommendations to optimize equipment performance, reliability, cost and safety.
- Reviews and benchmarks Mechanical Engineering performance across operations and industry.
- Leads sourcing of new Mechanical Engineering processes and technologies to meet future business requirements.
- Aligns with DeBeers and Anglo American Discipline Engineers regarding standards, specifications and designs.
- Provides direction in the design and acquisition of mechanical plant and equipment.
Administration
- Reviews Asset Management performance reports and statistics.
- Ensures the risk log and scorecards are up-to-date.
- Attends to all administrative functions of the department.
Compliance to Mechanical Engineering Standards
- Updates and manages the implementation of standards and procedures.
Subordinate Effectiveness
- Sets, monitors and reviews performance of subordinates.
Talent Management
- Builds capability and capacity within Mechanical Engineering by: o Identifying training needs within engineering workforce.
- Developing and implementing career plans, succession plans and training plans, o Communicating AM business processes.
Research
- Researches best practice approaches and standards in Mechanical Engineering and looks for opportunities to replicate in Debswana.
Safety, Health and Environment
- Provides Visible Felt Leadership (VFLs) in safety, health, environment and sustainable development.
- Embeds leading SHE management practices, identifies areas for improvement and recommends actions to address gaps.
- Proactively identifies m onitors and mitigates.
- Knows and understands the risk of own profile for his / her area of responsibility.
- Adheres to all safety, health and environmental policies and procedures as well as Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act in area of responsibility.
