Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) – 15 Nurses for 6 months only (Tenable in Gaborone, Kweneng East, Mahalapye, Palapye, Francistown and Tutume)

Job purpose
The incumbent will be responsible for assisting the implementation of the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision and manage the surgical procedures
Roles and responsibilities
- Assist the Doctor or certified nurses during the VMMC procedure and actively participate in implementation of the MOVE (Models of Optimizing Volumes and Efficiencies).
- Carry out pre-circumcision preparations and make sure that the operation room is ready for the operation and the required equipment is in good condition, functioning properly and is sterilized. Adherence to infection control protocols and standards.
- Prepare the client for VMMC procedure and administer local anaesthesia Complete the suturing process following the VMMC procedure.
- Provide counselling for HIV testing and VMMC acceptance, and answer client questions regarding the VMMC procedure.
- Provide client education in VMMC and HIV and secure informed consent from clients or the parent/guardian prior to VMMC.
- Obtain the client’s medical history and conduct a physical examination preprocedure- conduct pre-operation screening of clients.
- Clean and apply dressings to patients after procedures and reinforce postoperative messages especially wound care
- Conduct post-operative reviews on clients – including telephonic and or physical follow up at Day 2, Day 7 and 42 post operatively.
- Report all AEs observed during review visits as per the PEPFAR AE classification guide.
- Ensure that clients’ information is properly and accurately recorded and reported in all VMMC forms
- Restocks supplies, decontaminates instruments and equipment for autoclaving
- Participate in Quality Assurance activities and respond to queries
- Supervise booking of clients for VMMC to ensure correct registration and follow up of clients
- Organize and prepare schedules for outreach services
- Assist in data compilation for reporting to DHMT and MOH as advised by the supervisor.
- Participate in the development of the VMMC plan for the district
Qualifications and experience
- Degree in Nursing Science or Diploma in General Nursing
- Minimum of three (3) years post qualification as a Registered Nurse
- Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Botswana is mandatory
- VMMC Training and certification by MoHw (Theory or practice)
- Midwifery or some surgical experience that would have included suturing will be an added advantage
- Theatre experience will be an added advantage
- Counselling skills will be an added advantage
- Experience working in VMMC programme an advantage
Knowledge, skills and attributes
- Infection control measures in the health care setting
- Thorough knowledge of nursing practices in the operation/procedure room
- Ability to stand and work for long hours.
- Attention to detail, Botho, Initiative
- Clean drivers licence and willingness to drive will be an added advantage
Availability and hours of work:
- You must be flexible and available, weekends, holidays and overtime.
- You should be available to be called at short notice.
- Work schedule will vary based on the needs of the program
- On call arrangement
