Main purpose of job:
To provide consular assistance to British nationals in Botswana.
Roles and responsibilities:
Act as First Point of Contact during normal working hours for all British Nationals including those who are in distress. Attend to counter work and telephone inquiries.
Visit British nationals in hospital, prison and police detention and communicate with London and interested parties. Update our records of cases on consular software – casebook.
Prepare and issue Emergency Travel Documents, and carry out some documentary services.
Liaise with Honorary Consular Agents / Wardens in Botswana and other Consular Staff in the network and the region.
Cashiering consular fees and reconciling Consular taking on a daily and monthly basis
Provide statistical information and compile Monthly Information Reports for London.
Consular Outreach – build local partnerships to help deliver consular services. Liaise with local authorities and monitor changes in local procedures and practices
Create and carryout campaigns to advise and inform British nationals. Update the Embassy’s Travel Advice, Facebook and Twitter sites regularly. Set up and participate in outreach events with the British community.
Crisis Management: Contribute to testing and updating of a fit for purpose Crisis Management Plan
Provide regional cover for other posts in the region. Contribute to the wider corporate agenda at post.
Provision of Consular Services is one of the FCO’s priorities and at times can be very busy and demanding. It is an interesting and challenging service delivery role. You will be based at the High Commission in Gaborone. After initial training, you may be required to provide occasional regional cover to other posts in Southern Africa. Customer service skills are important for this role and experience in a customer facing role will be very useful.

Working patterns:
Part time role – Monday – Friday 0800 – 1300
