Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for the Centre Coordinator role at Lephoi Centre?

A minimum of a Diploma in Social Work, Community Development, or a related field is commonly required; some employers may accept a Bachelor’s degree, especially if combined with relevant experience. Registration with the Botswana Council for Social Workers (BCSW) is increasingly expected for roles in social services. Prior experience coordinating community-based programmes in Botswana, particularly in rural or semi-rural settings, is highly valued.

What does a typical day look like for a Centre Coordinator at Lephoi Centre?

Daily tasks include supervising outreach staff, facilitating community meetings, managing referrals to health and social support services, and maintaining records aligned with Ministry of Health and Wellness or Ministry of Local Government reporting standards. Coordinators often liaise with village health committees, traditional leaders, and district offices—reflecting Botswana’s strong emphasis on community participation and multi-sectoral collaboration. Administrative duties such as budget tracking and donor reporting may also form part of the routine, depending on funding sources.

How does workplace culture and expectations differ for this role in Botswana compared to other countries?

Respect for hierarchy, elders, and traditional authority is integral—coordinators are expected to engage respectfully with kgosikgolo and ward councillors when planning activities. Punctuality and relationship-building through face-to-face interaction remain highly valued, and flexibility is essential due to frequent travel across dispersed communities and variable infrastructure. Teamwork is emphasised, but decision-making often involves consultation with both formal institutions and informal community structures.

What career progression opportunities exist after working as a Centre Coordinator in Botswana’s social services sector?

Experienced coordinators may advance to District Social Welfare Officer, Programme Manager for NGOs, or technical advisor roles within government departments like the Department of Social Protection. Some pursue further studies—such as a Master’s in Public Health or Social Policy—supported by employer sponsorship or scholarships from institutions like UB or BOCODOL. Others transition into training, monitoring & evaluation, or policy support roles with UN agencies or development partners operating in Botswana.

What benefits are typically offered with this position, such as leave, medical aid, or pension?

Most formal employers—including government-linked centres and reputable NGOs—offer 30 days annual leave, sick leave per the Employment Act, and enrolment in the Botswana National Pension Scheme (BNPS). Medical aid is commonly provided, either through employer-sponsored schemes like Medshield Botswana or group plans administered via local insurers. Maternity and paternity leave follow statutory requirements under the Employment Act, with additional allowances sometimes available through donor-funded projects.
