BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

The Customs Clearing Officer will be responsible for facilitating the efficient and compliant clearance of imported and exported goods by preparing and coordinating all customs documentation and regulatory requirements, ensuring timely release and delivery of cargo to support uninterrupted mining operations.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Your key accountabilities include:

  • Preparing, verifying, and submitting customs documentation (e.g. SAD500, commercial invoices, permits, and packing lists) for all imports, exports, and transit shipments.
  • Liaising with Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS), clearing agents, and logistics providers to ensure smooth clearance and timely release of goods.
  • Ensuring accurate tariff classification (HS Codes), duty and tax assessments, and adherence to customs laws and import/export control regulations.
  • Tracking and monitoring shipment status and addressing any customs-related delays or queries promptly.
  • Maintaining records of customs entries, releasing documents, and duty payments for audit and compliance reporting.
  • Ensuring correct application of rebates, exemptions, or temporary import permits as per applicable trade agreements and licenses.
  • Supporting internal departments by advising on customs requirements for specific commodities, equipment, or projects.
  • Liaising with finance and procurement teams for duty reconciliation and timely submission of supporting documentation.
  • Reporting non-compliance issues and assist in implementing corrective actions to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Staying updated with changes in customs legislation, tariffs, and import/export regulations affecting mining imports.
  • Assisting in preparing reports for audits, customs inspections, and management review.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE:

  • Diploma in Customs Management, Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field (Degree in Supply Chain/Customs Management will be an advantage)
  • Certification in Customs Clearing and Forwarding is essential (e.g. from BURS-accredited institution)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in customs clearance or import/export administration
  • Experience in working with customs agents, BURS, and freight forwarding services.
