A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field is required; many incumbents hold a Master’s degree and professional certifications such as CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) or ACCA/CIMA, especially for finance-related corporate services functions. Local recognition of qualifications by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) is essential, and experience with Botswana’s Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act is highly valued.
What does a typical day look like for the Director Corporate Services at BBS?
The role involves overseeing HR, finance, ICT, procurement, facilities, and administrative functions—coordinating budget reviews with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, ensuring compliance with the Public Financial Management Act, and supporting standards implementation across departments. Daily tasks include chairing corporate services committee meetings, reviewing tender evaluations per Botswana’s procurement guidelines, and liaising with the Auditor General’s office on internal controls and reporting.
How does Botswana’s work culture influence expectations for this leadership role?
Respect for hierarchy, consensus-driven decision-making, and strong interpersonal diplomacy are central—leaders are expected to engage respectfully with traditional authorities, ministry officials, and staff across diverse tribal and educational backgrounds. Punctuality, formal communication (especially in written correspondence), and adherence to public sector ethics codes—including the Botswana Public Service Code of Conduct—are non-negotiable in daily practice.
What realistic career progression paths exist after serving as Director Corporate Services at BBS?
Incumbents often progress to senior executive roles within other parastatals (e.g., Botswana Power Corporation or Water Utilities Corporation) or transition into permanent secretary-level appointments in line ministries, particularly Trade and Industry or Finance. Some pursue board appointments in state-owned enterprises or take up advisory roles with the Office of the President’s Public Sector Reform Secretariat, leveraging their cross-functional governance experience.
What benefits—such as leave, medical aid, and pension—can I expect in this role?
As a senior public servant, you’ll be covered under the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BPOPF) and entitled to 30 days’ annual leave, 15 days’ sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per the Employment Act and Public Service Regulations. Medical aid is typically provided through the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS), and housing allowance or accommodation support may apply depending on current Treasury circulars and grade level.
