What qualifications and experience are typically required for the Director General position at the Digital Services Authority?
Candidates usually need a Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Public Administration, or a related field, plus at least 10-15 years of senior management experience in digital transformation or ICT sectors. Experience in government or regulatory environments is highly valued. Professional certifications such as ITIL, PMP, or CISSP strengthen your application.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of the Director General?
You will oversee policy development for digital services, manage stakeholder engagement with government ministries and private sector partners, and ensure regulatory compliance across Botswana's digital ecosystem. Strategic planning for national digital infrastructure and cybersecurity frameworks forms a core part of the role. You will also represent the Authority at regional forums like SADC and lead organizational transformation initiatives.
How does the work culture in Botswana's public sector affect this senior leadership role?
The role demands strong relationship-building skills given Botswana's consensus-driven decision-making culture and respect for hierarchical structures. You will navigate formal protocols when engaging with Permanent Secretaries and Ministers while driving innovation in a risk-averse environment. Punctuality, diplomatic communication, and community-oriented leadership are essential for success.
What career progression opportunities exist after serving as Director General?
Successful Directors General often advance to Permanent Secretary positions within the Ministry of Communications and Innovation or cross over to parastatal boards. Some transition to regional ICT leadership roles in organizations like Smart Africa or the African Union's digital agencies. Private sector advisory roles in telecommunications and fintech also become accessible given the regulatory expertise gained.
What benefits typically accompany this senior government position in Botswana?
The package generally includes a government pension scheme through the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund, comprehensive medical aid coverage, and generous annual leave entitlements. You may receive housing or housing allowances, official vehicle provision, and gratuity payments upon contract completion. Specific benefits depend on Public Service Act provisions and individual employment contracts.
How should I apply for this position, and what do selection panels prioritize?
Applications are submitted through the Directorate of Public Service Management or advertised government portals with certified copies of academic credentials, detailed CV, and references from senior officials. Panels prioritize demonstrated track records in digital policy implementation, stakeholder management across public-private boundaries, and understanding of Botswana's National Digital Strategy. Prepare for competency-based interviews assessing strategic vision, integrity, and transformational leadership capabilities.
