What are the common day-to-day responsibilities of this role?

The director oversees the internal audit function, develops risk‑based audit plans, and ensures compliance with the Pension Funds Act and other Botswana regulations. As an independent trustee, they also participate in board meetings, review investment performance, safeguard member interests, and provide objective assurance on governance and financial reporting.

How does the local work culture and expectations in Botswana influence this position?

Botswana's public sector emphasizes transparency, accountability, and adherence to statutory deadlines, so the role requires strong stakeholder engagement with government ministries, fund members, and service providers. Professionalism, punctuality, and a collaborative approach are expected, with an emphasis on ethical conduct and respect for hierarchical structures while maintaining independence as a trustee.

What realistic career progression or growth paths exist for someone in this role?

After serving as Director Internal Audit / Independent Trustee, professionals often advance to senior governance roles such as Chief Audit Executive, Head of Risk Management, or become a board chairperson for other pension or statutory bodies. Continuous professional development, obtaining additional qualifications (e.g., CFA, FRM), and demonstrating leadership in complex audits can open doors to consultancy or advisory positions within Botswana's financial sector.

Employees usually receive a competitive leave package (including annual leave, sick leave, and public holidays), medical aid coverage that often extends to dependents, and participation in the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund itself. Additional benefits may include performance‑based bonuses, study leave for professional exams, and access to wellness programs or housing allowances depending on the employer's policy.

How should a job seeker apply and what do employers in Botswana look for in candidates for this role?

Applications are typically submitted through the BPOPFF website, government recruitment portals, or reputable recruitment agencies, accompanied by a detailed CV, certified copies of qualifications, and a cover letter highlighting relevant audit and trusteeship experience. Employers look for proven expertise in internal audit frameworks, knowledge of Botswana's pension legislation, strong analytical skills, integrity, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with board members and senior management.
