Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to become an Examination Invigilator at BICA?

A minimum of BGCSE or equivalent is typically required, though some employers prefer candidates with tertiary education or teaching experience. BICA may require a clean criminal record and professional references due to the sensitive nature of examination materials.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an Examination Invigilator?

You will verify candidate identities, distribute examination materials, monitor the examination room to prevent malpractice, and collect scripts at the end of sessions. Invigilators must also handle unexpected situations calmly and follow strict protocols set by examining bodies.

How does the temporary nature of this role work in Botswana's employment context?

Temporary positions are common during examination periods in May-June and November-December, with contracts typically lasting 2-4 weeks per session. While there is no guaranteed renewal, reliable invigilators are often re-engaged for subsequent examination cycles.

What benefits can I expect as a temporary Examination Invigilator?

Benefits for temporary roles are generally limited and vary by employer; you may receive a daily or hourly rate without standard permanent employee benefits like medical aid or pension. Some institutions provide transport allowances or meals during long examination days.

How do I apply for Examination Invigilator positions at BICA, and what do employers look for?

Monitor BICA's website and local newspapers like Mmegi or The Botswana Gazette for vacancy announcements, then submit a CV and certified copies of qualifications. Employers value punctuality, integrity, attention to detail, and prior experience in education or administrative roles.

Can this temporary role lead to permanent employment or career growth?

While invigilation itself offers limited progression, it can provide valuable experience for permanent administrative or academic positions within educational institutions. Demonstrating reliability and professionalism may lead to referrals or consideration for other roles at BICA or similar organizations.
