Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are typically required for the EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS OFFICER II role at the Botswana Examinations Council?

Applicants usually need a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or a related field from a recognised institution, preferably with a teaching qualification (e.g., PTC or B.Ed). Relevant experience in examination administration, invigilation, or education support within Botswana’s public or private school system is strongly preferred.

What does a typical day look like for an EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS OFFICER II in Botswana?

Daily tasks include coordinating school-based exam logistics, verifying candidate entries, distributing and collecting question papers and scripts across districts, and liaising with headteachers and regional offices. During examination periods, officers conduct spot checks on centres, resolve on-the-ground issues, and ensure strict adherence to BEC’s examination regulations and national protocols.

How does the work culture and professional expectations for this role reflect Botswana’s local context?

Respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and strong interpersonal communication — especially in Setswana and English — are essential when engaging with schools, communities, and government stakeholders. Officers are expected to uphold integrity, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity, particularly when working in rural or remote areas where community trust and relationship-building are critical.

What realistic career progression paths exist for an EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS OFFICER II within Botswana’s education sector?

With experience and further study (e.g., postgraduate diploma in Education Management or Public Administration), officers may progress to EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS OFFICER I, then Senior Officer or Team Leader roles within BEC. Some transition into curriculum support, quality assurance, or district-level education administration positions in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development.

What benefits — such as leave, medical aid, and pension — are typically offered to this role in Botswana?

As a public service position under the Botswana Examinations Council, incumbents are covered by the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and entitled to 30 days’ annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per the Public Service Act. Medical aid is usually provided through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) once fully operational, supplemented by employer-supported health plans during the transition phase.

How do I apply for this role, and what do employers in Botswana specifically look for in candidates?

Applications are submitted via the BEC website or the Public Service Commission portal when vacancies are advertised, requiring certified academic documents, police clearance, and referees’ reports. Employers prioritise candidates with proven experience in high-stakes examination environments, familiarity with BEC’s examination cycles (e.g., BGCSE, BOCSE), and demonstrated reliability, discretion, and logistical competence in multi-school coordination.
