VACANCY: Head of Unit (Functional Life Skills
and Academics) on D2 salary scale x 1 Post
Applications are invited from highly motivated and
well experienced self-driven citizens of Botswana for
the position of Head of Unit (Functional Life Skills &
Academics) in the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic
Education under the Department of Learner Support
Services tenable at Maun Centre for Special
Education.

SALARY SCALE: D2 (P337, 008 – P371, 628
per annum)

LEAVE DAYS: 30 Working Days per
Annum

BENEFITS: i) Optional medical aid scheme with
the Botswana Public Officers Medical Aid Scheme
(BPOMAS – Government pays 50% and employee
pays 50%)
ii) Contributory pension scheme (Government
contributes 15% and employee contributes 5%)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Education – Special Education
(Intellectual or Multiple Disabilities) or an equivalent
from a recognized and accredited Institution.

EXPERIENCE:
Applicants should have a minimum of ten (10) years
experience in Special Education Teaching, two (2)
years of which should have been served at D3 salary
scale or equivalent position and duties in the Private
Sector or Parastatal Organisations.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To plan, coordinate and lead center based functional
life skills programmes and services.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Facilitates admissions of learners with severe to
profound intellectual and multiple disabilities in the
Centre.
Oversees and guides on the placement of learners
with severe to profound intellectual and multiple
disabilities according to the levels offered in special
schools and centers or special education units.
Coordinates the transition of learners with diverse
special education needs at different levels.
Coordinates and provides support for profiling of
learners with severe to profound intellectual and
multiple disabilities.
Monitors and evaluates implementation of learner
support interventions.
Leads case conferencing of complex cases to guide
on interventions and transitional pathways.
Monitors and evaluates teaching and learning to
enable improved holistic development, knowledge
and skills acquisition by learners.
Guides and supports teachers in the development,
implementation and evaluation of Individualized
Education Plans (IEPs) for learners in the Centre.
Advocates and promotes awareness of inclusion and
support programmes to facilitate learner transition.
Collaborates with parents, diagnostic specialists, and
other agencies to strengthen learner support.
Manages and reviews performance of supervisees.
Provides professional guidance and expertise to
teachers, school management, parents and learners
on matters pertaining to special education.
Compiles and submits reports on performance of
unit to the Centre Coordinator.
Undertakes any other related duties as may be
assigned by Management to meet the exigency of
the Service.
