Some positions may also ask for familiarity with educational software and e‑learning platforms.

What are the common day-to-day responsibilities of an ICT Officer in a Botswana school?

Day‑to‑day duties include maintaining the school’s computer labs, ensuring internet connectivity, managing user accounts, and providing technical support to teachers and students. The ICT Officer also oversees backup procedures, updates software, and coordinates with vendors for equipment purchases. Additionally, they may assist in integrating ICT into lesson plans and conduct basic training sessions for staff.

How does the work culture and expectations for ICT staff in Botswana schools differ from private sector IT roles?

In Botswana schools, ICT staff are expected to work regular school hours with occasional after‑hours support for events or exams, reflecting a service‑oriented culture rather than the project‑driven pace of private IT firms. Collaboration with teachers and administrators is emphasized, and there is a strong focus on reliability and uptime for educational activities. Dress code tends to be smart‑casual, and professionalism in dealing with minors is essential.

What realistic career progression paths exist for an ICT Officer working in Botswana's education sector?

Career growth can lead to senior ICT roles such as ICT Coordinator, IT Manager, or Head of ICT within a school district or private school network. Benefits commonly include paid annual leave (usually around 20‑25 days per year), sick leave, and public holidays, along with contributions to a pension fund or provident fund as required by Botswana law. Many employers provide medical aid schemes or health insurance subsidies, and some offer professional development allowances for certifications or training. Exact packages vary by employer but generally align with national labour standards.

How should a job seeker apply for an ICT Officer position at a Botswana school, and what do employers look for in candidates?

Employers in Botswana look for candidates who demonstrate technical competence, good communication skills, and a commitment to supporting the educational environment. Providing examples of past school or community ICT projects can strengthen an application.
