Main Purpose of the Job
To provide professional legal advice and corporate secretarial services to the University by supporting the Council, Vice Chancellor, and the Executive Management Team to deliver high-quality governance and ensure efficient, effective, and legally compliant activities and decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Secretary to Council by compiling documents for Council meetings and taking minutes to ensure quality support for decision-making.
  • Play a critical role in ensuring legal compliance and effective risk management by advising the Council on statutory and governance requirements, maintaining compliance with applicable laws and policies, and facilitating the identification and mitigation of governance-related risks.
  • Act as the principal legal resource person to the University management by providing legal advice on a wide range of issues involving good governance.
  • Advise the Council, Vice Chancellor and the Executive Management Team on matters involving the constitution and statutes of the University, interpreting them effectively and drafting or redrafting statutes as necessary.
  • Keep the Vice Chancellor and the Executive Management Team apprised of legal issues, including new legislation which has a bearing on the operations of the University, ensuring the University achieves its mission.

Requirements

  • LLB from a recognised university plus admission to practice in the courts of Botswana is required.
  • Five years post-qualification experience in a legal and compliance role.
  • Experience as a corporate attorney is an added advantage.
  • Law Society Membership in good standing is essential.
  • Exposure to corporate and board governance.
  • Professional secretarial qualification is an added advantage.
  • Experience in a Higher Education academic institution is an added advantage.
