The position holder is responsible for formulating, coordinating, managing and implementing the public relations and communications strategies in line with the University’s strategic plan for promotion of a positive public image of the institution nationally, regionally and internationally. The position holder will build and maintain the university’s reputation, enhance its public image and ensure effective communication with both internal and external stakeholders. The position will further manage the media relations, protect corporate reputation, stakeholder engagement and management, crisis management, and the University’s primary front-line communication touchpoints (including the Switchboard and information desks).

Key Responsibilities

  • Advice on Public Relations and Communication matters including the latest trends;
  • Build and maintain positive relations with internal and external stakeholders and identify opportunities for partnerships and sponsorships;
  • Coordinate all University Public Relations and Communications activities and develop content for various communication channels;
  • Develop and implement the University’s Public relations and communication strategy;
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with media outlets and stakeholders; provide public relations guidance to faculties and departments;
  • Develop and review communication policies, protocols, and guidelines;
  • Oversee media content, branding, and messaging across all communication platforms;
  • Monitor and analyse media coverage, industry trends, and emerging issues;
  • Promote the University’s corporate social investment and sustainability initiatives through strategic media engagement;
  • Respond to media enquiries, coordinate interviews, and serve as spokesperson where required; manage the University’s digital and electronic communication platforms;
  • Develop and implement crisis communication plans; manage communications during emergencies and sensitive situations to safeguard the University’s reputation;
  • Provide communication and media training to University leadership;
  • Lead the development and implementation of the University’s corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives;
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders to advance community impact and strategic partnerships; integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into communication strategies;
  • Provide excellent customer service ensuring client and stakeholder satisfaction;
  • Participate in recruitment and ensure retention and development of a diverse team;
  • Assist with the development and management of the departmental budget;
  • Develop and manage public relations and communication risk register with clear mitigation strategies;
  • Ensure unit compliance to legislative and statutory requirements;
  • Prepare sustainability reports and related documentation to communicate the University’s ESG commitments, achievements, and performance;
  • Contribute to the development of University and departmental strategies, policies, plans and procedures; and
  • Undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor in line with the role.

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Business Administration, Marketing, or related field is required;
  • Membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. PRISA, CIM, IABC, WCFA etc).
  • A minimum of six (6) years of relevant work experience, with three (3) years at senior officer or equivalent level;
  • Higher Education sector experience is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong project management and organisational abilities;
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools, social media platforms, and content management systems;
  • Crisis communication and issues management expertise;
  • Strong media relations and media training experience;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders;
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
