Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for a Nightwatchman role in Botswana’s public sector?

Applicants usually need at least a Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC) or equivalent, with preference given to those with a Certificate in Security Operations from a Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA)-accredited institution. Prior experience in security or military service is highly valued, and a valid Botswana Police Clearance Certificate is mandatory for all government security roles.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Nightwatchman at the Ministry for State President, Defence and Security?

Duties include conducting regular patrols of assigned premises, monitoring access points, logging visitor entries, and reporting irregularities via radio or incident logbooks. Nightwatchmen must remain vigilant during overnight shifts, respond to alarms or disturbances, and liaise promptly with police or internal security response teams as per Ministry protocols.

How does work culture and employer expectations differ for Nightwatchmen in Botswana’s public sector compared to private employers?

Public sector roles emphasise strict adherence to hierarchy, punctuality, formal reporting, and respect for official protocol — especially when guarding sensitive government facilities. Attendance is closely monitored, uniforms must be worn correctly at all times, and disciplinary action for breaches (e.g., sleeping on duty) is swift and aligned with Public Service Act guidelines.

What realistic career progression paths exist for Nightwatchmen employed by Botswana’s Ministry for State President, Defence and Security?

With consistent performance and further training, officers may progress to Senior Nightwatchman, Security Supervisor, or transition into specialised units like the Presidential Protection Unit after internal vetting. Some pursue part-time diplomas in Security Management or Public Administration through institutions like BOITE or UB, supporting lateral moves into administrative or coordination roles within the Ministry.

What standard benefits (leave, medical aid, pension) can a Nightwatchman expect in this government role?

Employees are covered under the Botswana Public Officers’ Pension Fund (BPOPF) and entitled to 30 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave as per the Public Service Regulations. Medical aid is provided through the Government Health Insurance Scheme (GHIS), which covers outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services at accredited facilities across Botswana.
