Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to apply for an office cleaner position in Ghanzi District?
Typically a Junior Certificate (Form 3) or even primary education is acceptable, but a clean police clearance is often required for government posts. Some employers may prefer prior cleaning experience, though on-the-job training is common. No formal certification is strictly required, but basic literacy and hygiene knowledge help.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an office cleaner for the Ministry?
You will be responsible for sweeping, mopping, dusting, and sanitising offices, corridors, and restrooms, as well as disposing of waste and replenishing supplies. You may also be asked to clean windows, furniture, and meeting rooms after official events. Following a daily cleaning schedule and reporting maintenance issues to a supervisor are also expected.
What is the work culture and expectations like in Botswana public service offices?
Punctuality and respect for authority are highly valued, as is wearing the provided uniform or clean clothing. You will be expected to work independently but also coordinate with colleagues to ensure shared spaces remain presentable. Discretion is key, as you may handle sensitive documents or official areas—never touch papers or personal belongings.
Are there realistic career progression opportunities from an office cleaner role?
With good performance and loyalty, you may be promoted to senior cleaner or supervisor, especially if you gain additional skills like floor care or basic maintenance. Government ministries often prefer internal promotions for trusted junior staff. You could also use this role as a stepping stone to a maintenance assistant or general handyman position.
What benefits are typically offered for government cleaner posts in Botswana?
Government positions usually offer leave (annual and sick), a pension fund, and medical aid contributions, though specifics vary by contract. You may also receive a housing allowance or transport allowance depending on policy. Salary scales are set by government grading, but actual figures differ by experience and grade—check the specific vacancy announcement.
How do I apply and what does the employer look for in a cleaner applicant?
Applications are typically submitted through the official Ministry of State President website or a physical drop-off at the Ghanzi District office, with a CV, application letter, and certified copies of certificates. Employers look for reliability, a clean criminal record, basic English or Setswana communication, and a willingness to work early shifts. Neatness and attention to detail are assessed through the interview and practical test.
