Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for an Office Cleaner role at the Ministry of State President, Defence and Security in Botswana?

No formal academic qualifications are mandatory, but completion of Junior Secondary Education (JSE) or equivalent is commonly expected. Basic literacy in English and Setswana is essential for following instructions and safety signage. Some employers may prefer candidates with prior cleaning experience or short-term vocational training from institutions like BOCODOL or local TVET centres.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for this role in a government ministry setting?

Duties include vacuuming, mopping, dusting, sanitising restrooms, emptying bins, and replenishing supplies across offices, meeting rooms, and common areas. Cleaners must adhere to strict hygiene protocols and scheduled cleaning rosters, often working early mornings or after hours to avoid disrupting official operations. Compliance with government facility standards and reporting maintenance issues to supervisors is also expected.

How does workplace culture and expectations differ for cleaners in Botswana’s public sector compared to private companies?

Public sector roles emphasise discipline, punctuality, respect for hierarchy, and adherence to national values such as Botho (human dignity). Cleaners are expected to maintain discretion and confidentiality, especially in sensitive ministries, and wear approved uniforms and ID badges at all times. Attendance is closely monitored, and absenteeism without valid leave may lead to disciplinary action under the Public Service Act.

Are there realistic opportunities for career progression from this position within Botswana’s civil service?

Yes — with consistent performance and additional training, cleaners may progress to supervisory roles like Cleaning Supervisor or Facilities Assistant through internal vacancies and competency-based assessments. Further education (e.g., NQF Level 3–4 in Facilities Management) and passing Public Service Commission exams can support lateral moves into broader facilities or administrative support roles. Progression depends on vacancies, merit, and adherence to civil service promotion guidelines.

What benefits are typically offered to Office Cleaners employed by Botswana’s central government?

Employees are covered under the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BPOPF) and entitled to statutory leave including annual, sick, and maternity/paternity leave per the Employment Act. Medical aid is not automatically provided but may be accessed via the National Health Insurance scheme once implemented; currently, some staff access government health facilities. Other benefits include paid public holidays and end-of-year bonuses subject to budgetary approval.

How do I apply for this role, and what do hiring managers in Botswana’s public sector specifically look for?

Applications are submitted through the Public Service Commission (PSC) portal or advertised vacancies on the Government Gazette and Ministry noticeboards — walk-in applications are not accepted. Hiring managers prioritise reliability, proven work history (often verified via referees), physical fitness for manual tasks, and familiarity with government protocols. A clean criminal record and willingness to undergo vetting (especially for security-sensitive ministries) are standard requirements.
