Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for an Office Cleaner role in Botswana?

No formal academic qualifications are mandatory, but employers often prefer candidates with at least a Junior Certificate or equivalent. Basic literacy in English and Setswana is expected, and prior cleaning experience or short courses from institutions like BOCODOL or local vocational centres may strengthen your application.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for this role in Botswana’s public sector offices?

Duties include vacuuming, mopping, dusting, emptying bins, sanitising restrooms, and replenishing supplies across government office spaces. You’ll usually work early mornings or after hours to avoid disrupting staff, and must follow DPSM hygiene protocols and safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

How does workplace culture and expectations differ for cleaners in Botswana’s public service compared to private sector roles?

Public sector cleaning roles emphasise respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and adherence to official dress codes (e.g., wearing issued uniforms and ID badges). Staff are expected to maintain discretion, uphold confidentiality around office materials, and align with national values such as Botho and service excellence as outlined in the Public Service Act.

Are there realistic opportunities for career progression from an Office Cleaner position in Botswana’s public service?

Yes — consistent performance may lead to promotion to Senior Cleaner or Supervisory Cleaner roles, especially after completing in-service training through DPSM or the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA)-accredited programmes. Long-serving staff may also transition into Facilities Assistant or Administrative Support roles via internal recruitment and competency assessments.

What benefits can I realistically expect, such as leave, medical aid, or pension?

Permanent cleaners under DPSM fall under the Public Service Act and receive annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per the Employment Act. They contribute to the Botswana National Pension Scheme (BNPS) and may access government-subsidised medical services through the Ministry of Health; medical aid is not standard but may be offered conditionally by some departments.

How do I apply, and what do DPSM recruiters specifically look for in candidates?

Applications must be submitted online via the DPSM e-Recruitment Portal during open vacancies, accompanied by certified ID, educational certificates, and referee contacts. Recruiters prioritise reliability, physical fitness, clean criminal record (police clearance required), and evidence of previous work discipline — references from past employers carry significant weight in shortlisting.
