Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a PBL facilitator at the University of Botswana?
You typically need a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, though a Master's or higher is often preferred for university-level facilitation. Teaching experience or training in problem-based learning methodology is highly advantageous. Additional certifications in education or instructional design can strengthen your application.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a part-time PBL facilitator?
You will guide small groups of students through case-based learning scenarios, encouraging critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving. Responsibilities include preparing learning materials, facilitating discussions, assessing student participation, and providing constructive feedback. You may also attend faculty meetings and contribute to curriculum development on an ad-hoc basis.
How does part-time work culture differ from full-time roles at Botswana universities?
Part-time facilitators usually work on semester contracts with flexible hours tied to tutorial schedules, lacking the job security of permanent staff. You are expected to maintain professional standards and punctuality, but may have limited access to campus resources and no obligation for administrative duties. Building strong relationships with full-time faculty can lead to more consistent teaching opportunities.
What benefits can I expect as a part-time employee at the University of Botswana?
Part-time positions typically do not include comprehensive benefits such as medical aid, pension, or paid leave, which are usually reserved for permanent staff. You may receive pro-rated access to certain professional development opportunities. Always clarify terms during the interview process, as some contracts may offer limited allowances.
What career progression opportunities exist for PBL facilitators in Botswana's education sector?
With experience, you can advance to full-time lecturer positions, curriculum coordinator roles, or educational consultancy work. Some facilitators pursue further studies to qualify for permanent academic posts or transition into instructional design and e-learning development. Networking within Botswana's higher education community and maintaining strong student evaluations are key to unlocking these paths.
How should I apply for a PBL facilitator position, and what do employers look for?
Submit your application through the University of Botswana's official channels, typically requiring a CV, certified academic transcripts, and references highlighting your facilitation or teaching experience. Employers value demonstrated competency in student-centered learning, adaptability to diverse learners, and familiarity with Botswana's educational context. Prepare for a practical demonstration of your facilitation skills as part of the selection process.
