Forensic Pathology is a Unit under the Forensic Science Services Branch of the Botswana Police Service. It is responsible for medico-legal investigation of deceased persons within the jurisdiction of Botswana and Botswana citizens who die outside the country. To perform medico – legal post mortem cases in Botswana (Road Traffic Accidents, Suicides, traumatic deaths etc.) and give expert evidence in courts of law and to other relevant stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs medico – legal post mortems (Road Traffic Accidents, Suicides, traumatic deaths, foetus, drowning etc.) on all cases referred from medical officers and police to determine the cause of death.
  • Prepares reports on post mortem examinations and submits them to the police.
  • Attends exhumation and assists in the performance of the post mortem examinations on the exhumed body.
  • Visits scenes of crime to carry out examinations on the bodies of the deceased to determine cause of death.
  • Issues notice of death to the registrar of births and deaths after the post mortem examination.
  • Issues non-infectious disease certificates and completes other formalities to repatriate bodies outside the country.
  • Performs age estimation of individuals as may be directed by the court of law, or relevant authority.
  • Visits mortuaries in Botswana and examines the mortuary equipment periodically to determine availability, sufficiency and serviceability.
  • Advises government and stakeholders on medical aspects of law.
  • Assesses and analysis findings through subsequent examinations on the bodies of deceased.
  • Undertakes teaching of Police Officers, State Prosecutors, and Autopsy Technicians on Medico legal investigations and basics of Forensic Medicine.
  • Undertakes any other related duties as may be required to meet the exigencies of the services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from a reputable university and registered with the Botswana Health Professions Council.
  • Minimum of two (2) years as Senior Medical Officer at D3 scale or five (5) years in relevant field. Knowledge in Post-mortem examinations will be an added advantage.

Salary

D2 (P 337 008.00 – P 371 628.00,00) per annum
