Sandire Motheo is seeking to appoint a PROCESS MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT (REF:279) – TENABLE IN GHANZI. The Process Maintenance Superintendent ensures the execution of integrated maintenance strategies that support production targets, extend equipment life, and align with business objectives. The Process Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and technical expertise across all maintenance disciplines to ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of the Copper Process Plant and associated infrastructure. This role oversees the Mechanical, Electrical/Instrumentation Superintendents, as well as the Planning, Dewatering, HDPE welding, Infrastructure Maintenance, and Condition Monitoring teams. The Process Maintenance Superintendent ensures the execution of integrated maintenance strategies that support production targets, extend equipment life, and align with business objectives. The position demands a high level of technical proficiency, strong leadership, and the ability to drive operational excellence across multiple functional areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and promote a strong safety-first culture, ensuring compliance with all statutory regulations and the Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act.
  • Enforce adherence to OHSE procedures, risk assessments, Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), and critical control verifications.
  • Champion proactive risk management and continuous improvement in safety performance across all maintenance teams.
  • Drive compliance with environmental standards, achieving zero reportable incidents through effective planning and control of maintenance activities.
  • Provide strategic leadership and daily oversight to the Mechanical and Electrical/Instrumentation, as well as Planning, Dewatering, HDPE welding, and Infrastructure teams.
  • Build a high-performance maintenance organization focused on safety, accountability, reliability, and teamwork.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, identify skills gaps, and implement training and succession plans to develop internal capability.
  • Promote cross-functional collaboration with Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain to ensure alignment of maintenance priorities.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in maintenance practices and equipment reliability.
  • Develop and implement short-, medium-, and long-term maintenance strategies for plant and mobile equipment reliability.
  • Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs through the site CMMS (Pronto or SAP).
  • Ensure effective coordination between maintenance planning and execution teams to meet operational targets.
  • Lead shutdown preparation and execution, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality work completion.
  • Direct root cause analysis and reliability reviews of recurring failures to implement permanent solutions.
  • Drive Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) principles and continuous improvement initiatives to reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Oversee maintenance of all plant and infrastructure assets, including but not limited to:
  • Process plant equipment: crushers, mills, conveyors, flotation, thickeners, filters, pumps, compressors, and pipework.
  • Electrical and instrumentation systems: MCC’s, VSD’s, transformers, substations, control systems, instrumentation loops, and PLC/SCADA systems.
  • Mobile and support equipment: cranes, crane trucks, forklifts, skid steers, telehandlers, light vehicles, and light trucks.
  • Dewatering systems and HDPE pipelines for both process and infrastructure water management.
  • Site infrastructure: workshops, process buildings, storage facilities, and utilities.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer and statutory standards.
  • Monitor condition monitoring data and reliability KPI’s to proactively manage asset health and performance.
  • Manage and control critical spares inventory, ensuring optimal balance between availability and cost.
  • Oversee all maintenance and capital projects, ensuring scope definition, cost control, contractor management, and QA/QC compliance.
  • Assist to lead project execution with the Project Superintendent, ensuring adherence to design specifications, safety standards, and timelines.
  • Support plant improvement initiatives through modification, upgrade, or replacement of critical assets.
  • Promote and apply continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, 5S) across maintenance activities.
  • Prepare, manage, and control the maintenance operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor expenditure against forecasts, ensuring cost discipline and value optimization.
  • Optimize resource allocation (labour, materials, contractors) to achieve maximum maintenance efficiency.
  • Participate in life-cycle cost analysis, asset replacement planning, and budget forecasting.
  • Ensure accurate and timely use of the CMMS (Pronto or SAP) for work order management, asset tracking, and maintenance history.
  • Review maintenance performance metrics and report on MTBF, MTTR, availability, and reliability KPIs.
  • Maintain up-to-date technical documentation, statutory records, and inspection registers.
  • Ensure data-driven decision-making through effective use of planning and condition monitoring tools.

Requirements

  • Advanced technical and diagnostic skills across process plant and mobile maintenance disciplines.
  • Financial acumen and commercial awareness in managing maintenance budgets.
  • High proficiency in MS Office, CMMS platforms, and reliability analysis tools.
  • Ensure compliance with company OHSE Management Systems and statutory obligations
  • Strong leadership and coaching abilities with a collaborative management style.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strategic thinker capable of driving performance improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrate visible leadership in health, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Maintenance Engineering (or equivalent trade background with extensive supervisory experience)
  • Registration with or eligibility for registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB), Botswana (or equivalent body).
  • Additional qualifications in Project Management, Reliability Engineering, or Business Management will be advantageous.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in maintenance management within the mineral processing or heavy industrial sector, including at least 7 years at superintendent or manager level.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary maintenance functions including mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams.
