Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for a Public Relations Officer role at a conservation NGO in Botswana?

Most employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field, and a certificate in PR or digital marketing adds value. Practical experience in media relations and content creation is often as important as formal education, so internships or volunteer work with local NGOs will strengthen your profile.

What are the common day-to-day responsibilities of a Public Relations Officer for SAVE Wildlife Conservation Fund?

You would typically draft press releases, manage social media platforms, coordinate with local media outlets, and organise public awareness events or school outreach programmes. You would also support fundraising campaigns by communicating the organisation's impact to donors and stakeholders in Botswana.

What should I expect from the local work culture and expectations in Botswana's NGO sector?

Teamwork and respect for hierarchy are important, and meetings often begin with a moment of prayer or acknowledgement, depending on the organisation. You should be comfortable with both English and Setswana, as many community-facing activities and local media interactions happen in Setswana.

What realistic career progression paths exist for a Public Relations Officer in Botswana?

You can advance to senior communications officer, communications manager, or head of communications within the same NGO or by moving to larger conservation, corporate, or development organisations. Gaining experience in crisis communication and donor relations will make you competitive for more senior roles locally and internationally.

What typical benefits come with this role in Botswana, apart from salary?

Common benefits include 30 days of annual leave, a medical aid contribution, and membership in a pension or provident fund, though this varies by employer. Some NGOs also offer professional development opportunities, such as paid training or conference attendance, and flexible working arrangements in certain cases.

How should I apply and what do employers in Botswana look for in a candidate?

Applications are usually submitted by email with a CV and cover letter, and it is important to address how your experience relates to wildlife conservation and local community engagement. Employers look for strong writing samples, proven media contacts in Botswana, and a genuine passion for conservation, so highlight any relevant volunteering or work with local communities.
