Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of and implementation of the unit’s strategy, policies, and procedures;
- Plan, coordinate, schedule and implement field and laboratory practicals;
- Provide necessary support to students and researchers in laboratory practicals, field work, tutorials and research projects as directed by a course lecturer;
- Assist course lecturer with assessment/grading of students reports for laboratory/field work/tutorials;
- Contribute to ongoing research activities to support knowledge creation, intellectual property, and commercialization in line with area of expertise;
- Ensure that equipment is functional and optimally utilized;
- Ensure adherence to SHE protocols and guidelines;
- Provide technical advice to students and staff and timely reporting of equipment faults;
- Recommend decommissioning of obsolete equipment and its replacement;
- Maintain accurate and up to date inventory (equipment and stock) records;
- Participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks;
- Participate in internal and external audits in line with University policies;
- Respond to customer/stakeholder queries and inquiries related to area of expertise;
- Adhere to performance targets as reflected in the performance review and appraisal;
- Facilitate the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive inventory of technical equipment, tools, and supplies;
- Participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks;
- Collaborate with other units as needed to effectively deliver duties as defined;
- Undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor in line with their role.
Requirements
- Candidates should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or any relevant related discipline. A Masters degree in relevant area of expertise will be an added advantage .
- A minimum of four (4) years’ work experience is required; Higher education experience will be an added advantage .
- Candidate should be registered or eligible for registration as a professional by an appropriate and recognised professional body;
- Strong experience in technical operations, equipment maintenance, and facility management, preferably in an academic or research environment;
- Strong technical skills and knowledge of equipment maintenance procedures and inventory management practices;
- Understanding curriculum requirements to better support students and the lecturer;
- Ensuring accuracy in assessment methods and grading
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and interact with students;
- Commitment to safety and adherence to relevant regulations and standards.
