SHAFT SINKING SAFETY MANAGER – Ums Botswana 226 views

UMS Botswana Pty Ltd (a division of the UMS Group) is busy with an underground vertical shaft sinking project with JDS Energy & Mining Inc. (the EPCM contractor) for Lucara Botswana (Pty) Ltd at the Karowe Diamond Mine at Letlhakane in the Boteti sub-district. This exciting project is currently in the Main Sink contract phase. Shaft sinking and underground construction activities require critical skills and experience with an expert understanding of sinking methodologies, underground construction, mine health and safety, as well as contract management knowledge, which is essential. We are currently searching for suitably qualified and experienced candidates to be considered for the below positions in Letlhakane. Please note that all positions are project based.

The Safety Manager is responsible for managing and compliance compliance to SHEQ requirements at a located project to embed a resilient health, safety and environmental culture within all work-parties, employees, the company and the environment. This candidate will report to the Project Manager and the UMS Group Risk Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Management of SHEQ Policies, Procedures and System Compliance
  • Reports, Investigation, and resolution incidents, accidents or near misses and formulates proposals for corrective and/or preventive measures.
  • SHEQ reporting and administration.
  • Coordination of ISO 45001:2018 SHE Management System.
  • Development of Emergency Preparedness Systems.
  • Developing and coordination of the required project training plan in support of competence and skills transfer (in conjunction with the UMS Group HR Manager).

Requirements

  • Relevant qualification in Safety Management.
  • Blasting Certificate or Trade Certificate.
  • HIRA – Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Certificate.
  • First Aid Level 1 Certificate (NQF Level 3).
  • ISO 45001:2018 SHE Management System.
  • ICAM or Learning from Incidents or RCA.
  • Must have a recognized (14001) Systems and Auditing Certificates.
  • At least 10 years relevant experience in Underground Mining/Shaft Sinking. Project of which 5 years must have been at a mid-management level.
  • Knowledge of application of Mines Quarries and Machinery Act will be an advantage.
