MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To drive the University’s strategic theme of Academic quality and student reputation and ensuring student’s high performance. The incumbent would be responsible for the daily facilitation and provision of support for students with special needs, which will also include a high-level sign language interpretation to both students and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Sign Language Interpretation or Bachelor Degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation with major in Sign Language Interpretation.
- Sign Language Interpretation Certification preferred.
Experience
At least three (3) years post-qualification experience in a higher education institution. Experience working with University students, would be an added advantage.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Provide professional advice and facilitate for professional development, promote culture of inclusivity and create special needs awareness at BIUST.
- Provide sign language interpretation for students and staff requiring the service.
- Develop and implement procedures, case management plans and action plans for students with special needs.
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders to identify, internal and external factors which prevent full participation of students with special needs to fully access and excel in their education and training programs.
- Develop support systems which will enhance integration of students with special needs to adapt and equally enjoy their stay at BIUST for an exceptional experience
- Provide supervision, guidance, and advice to part-time Assistants, tutors and note takers while encouraging cohesiveness a supportive culture within the team.
- Provide, wellbeing support to student with special needs, their parents caretakers and guardians which may also include supportive Counselling, crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
